Anti-APC Coalition: Atiku, Obi Camps Tackle Bode George, Shekarau Over Anti-Coalition Comments

The newly formed anti APC coalition, spearheaded by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, has come under fire from political veterans, including Chief Bode George and former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau. The critics argue that the alliance lacks structure and is primarily driven by individual political ambitions rather than a cohesive strategy to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election.

During a press conference in Abuja, Atiku, Obi, and other opposition figures formally unveiled the coalition, marking the first step towards consolidating opposition forces. However, Shekarau and George dismissed the initiative as a hurriedly assembled political arrangement that may not stand the test of time. They expressed concerns that the coalition is not focused on nation-building but rather on positioning specific candidates for the presidency and vice presidency.

Atiku and Obi Camps Fire Back at Critics

Reacting to the criticisms, Atiku’s media aide, Paul Ibe, downplayed the remarks, asserting that the coalition is making tangible progress and will not be deterred by negative comments. He emphasized that the movement has already gained momentum, describing it as a “train that has left the station.” According to Ibe, George and Shekarau lack firsthand knowledge of the coalition’s goals and should refrain from making uninformed comments.

Obi’s spokesperson, Yunusa Tanko, also dismissed the objections raised by Shekarau and George, stating that the opposition alliance is focused on national development rather than personal ambitions. He pointed out that while some politicians may have reservations, the coalition remains committed to fostering a robust democratic process and ensuring good governance. He further assured Nigerians that details of a possible mega party will be disclosed at the appropriate time.

El-Rufai’s Defection From and the Path to Opposition Unity

A significant development fueling speculation about the coalition’s future was El-Rufai’s defection from the APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP). His move signaled dissatisfaction with the ruling party and an intent to challenge its dominance. The presence of key political figures, including former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal, National Secretary of the Coalition of United Political Parties Peter Ahmeh, and opposition leader Segun Showunmi, underscores the broad-based nature of the alliance.

Despite internal disagreements among opposition figures, supporters argue that the coalition remains the most viable alternative to prevent APC from retaining power in 2027. The ongoing discussions among opposition leaders, including former governors Rotimi Amaechi, Kayode Fayemi, and Abdullahi Adamu—who were absent from the unveiling event but acknowledged as part of the alliance—highlight the potential for a wider political realignment.

Lukman Warns of One-Party Dominance

Former APC National Vice Chairman (North-West), Mallam Salihu Lukman, issued a stark warning about the state of Nigeria’s opposition parties. He noted that internal conflicts within major opposition parties, including the PDP and LP, could lead to a scenario where the APC becomes the sole dominant party in the country. According to Lukman, the failure of opposition parties to unite under a strong front could result in a lack of competitive elections in 2027.

Lukman, however, dismissed fears that the anti APC coalition lacks structure, stating that the formation of a viable mega party remains a work in progress. He expressed confidence that the opposition will eventually establish a political platform capable of challenging the APC in the upcoming elections. “What we are going to give Nigerians will be something that is substantially different and will restore confidence in the political system,” he asserted.

Future of the Opposition Coalition

While the coalition has been met with skepticism from figures like Shekarau and George, its proponents insist that it represents a crucial step towards uniting Nigeria’s fragmented opposition. The alliance seeks to create a broad-based political platform that can effectively challenge the APC’s stronghold.

However, the success of this coalition depends on several factors, including resolving internal party conflicts, securing widespread grassroots support, and developing a clear policy agenda that resonates with Nigerians. As discussions continue, the coming months will determine whether this coalition evolves into a formidable political force or crumbles under internal disagreements and external pressure.

For now, the opposition remains divided on strategy, but united in its goal—to end APC’s rule in 2027.
