Anthony Joshua Involved in Fatal Ogun Road Crash; Two Confirmed Dead

World-renowned heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua was involved in a fatal road traffic accident on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, an incident that has left two people dead and prompted investigations by Nigerian road safety and security agencies. The crash occurred near the Danco Filling Station before the Sagamu Interchange, a busy stretch of the expressway known for heavy traffic and frequent accidents.

Joshua was traveling in a convoy when the vehicle he occupied collided with a stationary truck. While the boxer survived the incident, the loss of two lives has cast a sombre shadow over what eyewitnesses described as a chaotic rescue scene, drawing widespread public attention and concern.

The Crash and Immediate Aftermath

According to eyewitness accounts, the accident occurred at about 11 a.m. when a Lexus SUV conveying Anthony Joshua and other occupants struck a truck that was parked along the expressway. The vehicle reportedly carried four people, with Joshua seated in the rear. Two occupants — one seated beside Joshua and another in the front — were confirmed dead at the scene.

Bystanders and passers-by initiated rescue efforts before officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrived. An eyewitness who assisted at the scene said emergency help was flagged down immediately, as traffic slowed and onlookers gathered. Anthony Joshua was later taken away from the scene, conscious, while emergency responders secured the area and attended to the injured.

Security Convoy and Official Response

The crash involved a two-vehicle convoy, with Anthony Joshua’s security detail traveling in a second vehicle behind the Lexus SUV. Witnesses said members of the security team moved swiftly to manage the situation and coordinate emergency response efforts as authorities arrived.

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that investigations were underway to determine the exact cause of the crash. The spokesperson for the command acknowledged the fatalities and assured the public that further details would be released as inquiries progress. Attempts to obtain immediate comments from other traffic management authorities were initially unsuccessful.

Public Reaction and Ongoing Investigation

News of the crash sparked widespread reactions on social media, with fans and members of the public expressing concern for Anthony Joshua’s condition while also mourning the victims who lost their lives. Calls have also resurfaced for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, a critical transport corridor.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to establishing the circumstances surrounding the accident, including vehicle movement, road conditions, and compliance with safety regulations. As investigations continue, officials have urged motorists to exercise caution and adhere strictly to traffic rules to prevent further tragedies.
