Aminu Dantata Passes On at 94: Nation Bids Farewell to a Titan of Industry

Nigeria has lost one of its most prominent and respected businessmen, Alhaji Aminu Dantata, who passed away at the age of 94 on Saturday, June 28, 2025. His death was officially announced by his Principal Private Secretary, Mustapha Abdullahi Junaid, through a heartfelt Facebook post.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of our beloved father, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata. May Allah grant him Jannatul Firdaus and forgive his shortcomings. The Janazah details will be shared later, insha Allah,” Junaid wrote.

His passing marks the end of a remarkable era. Alhaji Aminu Dantata was one of the last surviving children of the legendary West African merchant, Alhaji Alhassan Dantata. His death has triggered an outpouring of grief and tributes from political leaders, business figures, and communities across Nigeria and beyond.

A Life Rooted in Legacy: From Kano to the World

Born on May 19, 1931, in Kano, Aminu Dantata was the 15th child of Alhassan Dantata, one of the wealthiest merchants in West Africa in the early 20th century. Raised in a family synonymous with commerce, Aminu Dantata grew up learning the art of trade, enterprise, and integrity from his father.

His early years were shaped by a deep sense of responsibility and an entrepreneurial spirit. Following the death of his father in 1955, Aminu and his siblings took over the family business, expanding it into new sectors and geographies while preserving the family’s commercial values.

Over the decades, Dantata transformed the family business into one of Nigeria’s most formidable conglomerates, diversifying into construction, real estate, agriculture, oil and gas, and manufacturing.

Entrepreneurial Achievements and Public Service of Alhaji Aminu Dantata

Aminu Dantata’s business acumen was unparalleled. He founded Express Petroleum & Gas Company Ltd, one of Nigeria’s earliest indigenous oil marketing companies. He was also instrumental in the establishment of Jaiz Bank, Nigeria’s first non-interest (Islamic) bank, demonstrating his forward-thinking approach to finance and community development.

Beyond business, Dantata was deeply involved in public service. He served as Kano State Commissioner for Economic Planning and Development between 1967 and 1972, playing a vital role in the state’s economic blueprint during the post-independence years. From 1960 to 1966, he was a member of the Northern House of Assembly, contributing to regional policymaking.

He was a key figure in several national economic initiatives, serving on the boards of the Nigerian Industrial Development Bank (NIDB) and participating in various international trade missions that shaped Nigeria’s post-colonial economic direction.

A Life of Giving: Philanthropy and Community Impact

Aminu Dantata was not just a businessman but a compassionate philanthropist whose generosity impacted countless lives. His commitment to humanitarian causes spanned education, healthcare, and religious development, particularly in Northern Nigeria.

He built schools, donated to hospitals, and funded scholarships for thousands of underprivileged youths. Dantata was also a major benefactor to Islamic institutions, mosques, and orphanages, emphasizing his belief in wealth as a tool for societal good.

Community leaders frequently described him as a quiet giver—someone who shunned publicity but whose charitable contributions were felt far and wide. His legacy lives on in the many institutions, businesses, and families whose futures he helped shape.

Farewell to a Titan: Funeral Plans and Tributes

The family has yet to announce details of Alhaji Aminu Dantata’s funeral (janazah) arrangements, though it is expected to follow Islamic rites and be attended by dignitaries, family, and community members from across the country.

Tributes have continued to pour in. Prominent figures, including political leaders, captains of industry, and religious scholars, have expressed their condolences. Many described him as a symbol of integrity, humility, and nation-building.

As Nigeria bids farewell to a titan of commerce and philanthropy, the legacy of Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata will endure for generations—a legacy built on hard work, service to humanity, and an unwavering commitment to the prosperity of his people.

May his soul rest in perfect peace. Ameen.
