In a dramatic political shift that has sent ripples through Nigeria’s South-South region, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has formally explained his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing national alignment, strategic development goals, and the need for effective governance in the interest of the people.
Strategic Defection for Development
Addressing a cheering crowd at the Victor Attah International Airport in Uyo on Wednesday upon his return from France, Governor Umo Eno declared that his decision to join the APC was carefully considered and guided by the long-term interest of Akwa Ibom State. He likened his leadership role to that of a driver navigating through a complex route, emphasizing that he must choose the best path to avoid stagnation.
“I am the one holding the steering wheel, and I know where there will be no traffic jam or potholes,” the governor said. “That’s why I have chosen to take Akwa Ibom on an expressway—free of traffic and potholes.”
Umo Eno, who came into office under the PDP in 2023, said his administration’s vision for development must align with the federal government, currently controlled by the APC, to ensure that Akwa Ibom is not isolated from national benefits.
Critics ‘Not from Akwa Ibom’ — Governor Eno Fires Back
Reacting to backlash from opposition figures and commentators, the governor downplayed the criticisms, insisting that many of his loudest critics were outsiders meddling in Akwa Ibom affairs. He urged citizens to ignore divisive rhetoric and support a progressive, united future.
“Some of them are not even from Akwa Ibom. They put their mouths in what does not concern them,” he said. “This progressive movement is within my right.”
He called on the people to stay focused and resist distractions, saying, “When you are pursuing an elephant, you don’t let a dog stop you on the road.”
Governor Umo Eno maintained that his move was not intended to foster division but to ensure that Akwa Ibom remains a major player in national politics, especially under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Commitment to Unity, Peace and Governance
Governor Umo Eno also reaffirmed his spiritual commitment to his leadership role, stating that his path is divinely guided. He assured citizens that his administration remains focused on peace, unity, and the welfare of the people, regardless of political realignments.
“I am committed to leading Akwa Ibom with clarity and divine guidance,” he said. “This is not about bitterness or betrayal. It’s about progress and unity.”
Umo Eno reiterated that political affiliations must not derail development, stressing that the state’s interests would be better protected through close collaboration with the federal government. His administration, he said, will continue to deliver democratic dividends across the state.
APC Leaders Rally Behind Governor Eno
Reacting to the governor’s return, APC State Chairman Obong Stephen Ntukekpo praised his defection as timely and strategic, describing the criticisms trailing the move as “baseless and unreasonable.”
“Governor Umo Eno is the right man for the moment,” Ntukekpo said. “His courage to put Akwa Ibom first will bring more federal attention and support to our state.”
The APC leadership believes the governor’s switch to the ruling party will strengthen the state’s voice at the national level and unlock critical federal partnerships and funding. The party has pledged full support for his administration.
A Warm Reception and a Message of Solidarity
The Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, who led a colourful welcome rally for the governor, said the massive turnout was a clear expression of support from Akwa Ibom people.
“The crowd you see here today is a demonstration of love and solidarity with a governor who has performed excellently within a short time,” Uwah said.
Political analysts view Governor Umo Eno’s defection as a significant realignment in Akwa Ibom and potentially a bellwether for further movement among South-South politicians ahead of the 2027 elections. Meanwhile, the PDP described his exit as “regrettable,” but insiders say the party is already strategizing for a response.
