The 2024 governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Edo State, Olumide Akpata, has announced his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), attributing his decision to the recent move by Peter Obi to the same party.
Akpata made the disclosure on Tuesday at a formal reception held in his honour at the ADC secretariat in Benin City. He stated that his decision was informed by a desire to “add value” to the party and align with what he described as a growing national movement aimed at repositioning Nigeria’s political direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Akpata Explains Decision to Join ADC
Akpata revealed that he formally joined the ADC following Obi’s entry into the party on December 31, 2025. According to him, Obi’s move signalled a strategic realignment that he believes holds promise for advancing national reforms.
Speaking during the ceremony, Akpata expressed appreciation for the reception accorded him by party leaders and members. He thanked the ADC leadership for what he described as its commitment to the vision of a “new Nigeria,” while also acknowledging the continued support of the Obidient Movement.
The former Labour Party candidate was officially handed the party membership card by the Edo State Chairman of the ADC, Kennedy Odion, in the presence of several prominent political figures.
ADC Leaders Welcome Growing Coalition
Among those present at the reception were former Edo State governors John Odigie-Oyegun and Oserheimen Osunbor, former Senate Chief Whip Roland Owie, and other party stakeholders.
In his remarks, Obi reiterated his commitment to national transformation. He stated that the movement’s goal is to build a country that works “for all and not just a few,” adding that Nigeria must transition from a consumption-driven economy to one rooted in production and inclusive development.
Oyegun, speaking at the event, described the ADC as a growing coalition gaining both numerical strength and quality membership. He said Nigeria requires urgent reforms and expressed confidence in the party’s expanding influence ahead of the 2027 elections.
Concerns Over 2027 Elections and Electoral Reforms
Professor Osunbor used the occasion to voice concerns about the conduct of future elections. He argued that the refusal to adopt mandatory real-time electronic transmission of election results in previous elections weakened public confidence in the electoral process.
He further alleged that resistance to such reforms could undermine transparency in the 2027 general elections. According to him, only those who intend to manipulate outcomes would oppose real-time transmission of results. He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and to demand credible electoral reforms.
Osunbor expressed optimism that the coalition currently being led within the ADC would replicate previous political successes, projecting that the party would emerge victorious in 2027. He maintained that strengthening democratic institutions remains central to achieving credible elections.
