The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced the successful completion of all documentation requirements with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), marking a significant step in its preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The confirmation was given by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, who disclosed in an interview with opitanglobamedia news that the party had resolved all outstanding issues as of last week.
“We have successfully completed our documentation with INEC. In fact, we were able to meet the outstanding requirements as at Thursday last week,” Abdullahi said, stressing the party’s commitment to due process.
Earlier, INEC had raised concerns that the coalition party had not fully complied with its documentation, citing pending submissions of principal officers, particularly the signatures of the National Chairman, Senator David Mark, and the National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola. The confirmation by Abdullahi now suggests that the party has moved past this hurdle.
Dalung Dismisses Fears Over Party’s Readiness
Former Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung, has assured Nigerians that the ADC is well-prepared for the 2027 elections despite earlier procedural concerns. Speaking on Arise TV’s Morning Show on Monday, Dalung emphasized that the party is not a mere association but a legally registered political organization with a long-standing history.
“The ADC is a registered political party in Nigeria and has been in existence for over 19 years. The party is undergoing a transition where coalition elements have been incorporated, and this process is ongoing, so it is incorrect to assert that it is an association,” Dalung stated.
He further explained that compliance with INEC’s requirements was non-negotiable and that the ADC leadership had worked tirelessly to meet all obligations. According to him, the completion of documentation demonstrates the coalition’s seriousness in strengthening internal structures ahead of the elections.
Commitment to Rule of Law and Internal Democracy
Dalung stressed that for the coalition to play a transformative role in Nigeria’s democracy, it must fully embrace the rule of law and internal democracy. He noted that impunity, injustice, and lack of respect for democratic values had weakened the nation’s political system, and urged the ADC to chart a different course.
“If injustice, impunity, lack of internal democracy and lack of respect for the rule of law are the things that have jeopardised our democracy, then the coalition movement must ensure that everything is done within the context of the law,” he said.
Dalung’s comments reinforce ADC’s message of positioning itself as a credible alternative to the ruling party by promoting accountability, fairness, and inclusiveness in its internal processes and public engagements.
Addressing Allegations of Hijack
The former minister also reacted to claims by Dumebi Kachikwu, ADC’s 2023 presidential candidate, who alleged that the party had been hijacked by external forces. Dalung dismissed the accusations, insisting that Kachikwu, though a respected member, does not hold an institutional role in the party’s organs.
“The former presidential candidate is a member of the party, but being a candidate in the last election does not place him within the organs of the party. He is free to hold opinions, but referring to other members of the party in such derogatory terms is inappropriate,” Dalung explained.
He added that the internal disputes had already been addressed and that Nigerians would soon be informed of the party’s formal position on the matter. His remarks were aimed at calming nerves and projecting stability within the ADC ahead of its election campaigns.
ADC’s Road to 2027
Looking ahead, Dalung expressed confidence in ADC’s capacity to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative in 2027. He argued that challenges such as internal wrangling and procedural compliance were natural in party politics and should not be mistaken for weaknesses.
“The ADC is prepared for 2027, and these challenges, whether internal wranglings or procedural requirements, are normal. From our activities across the country, it is clear that Nigerians can count on us to provide a credible alternative to the ruling party,” he affirmed.
With the completion of INEC’s documentation requirements, ADC is set to focus on mobilizing grassroots support, strengthening coalition partnerships, and presenting itself as a force capable of reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape.
