ADC Claims Nationwide Support as Aisha Yesufu Says Party Has ‘Over 200 Million Nigerians’ Behind It

Popular activist Aisha Yesufu has asserted that the African Democratic Congress (ADC) enjoys the backing of more than 200 million Nigerians, arguing that widespread public support could outweigh the political influence of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 Nigerian general elections.

Speaking during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television, Yesufu acknowledged that the APC currently holds significant institutional power through its control of many state governments. However, she argued that the ADC’s strength lies in the perceived support of ordinary Nigerians dissatisfied with the country’s current political and economic direction.

Yesufu maintained that while the ruling party may possess greater financial resources and political structures, the opposition party draws strength from the passion and frustrations of citizens across the country. Her remarks come amid intensifying political debate over governance, economic hardship, and security challenges under the administration of Bola Tinubu.

ADC vs APC: Money, Power and Public Support

During the televised programme, Yesufu openly acknowledged that the ruling APC has advantages when it comes to financial capacity. According to her, the party’s access to government resources means it can significantly outspend opposition groups during elections.

She stated that the ADC is not attempting to compete with the ruling party in terms of financial strength. Instead, she emphasized that the opposition party intends to rely on what she described as public enthusiasm and grassroots mobilisation across the country.

“Yes, they have about 30 governors and they can outspend us,” she said during the programme. “But they cannot outpassion us.”

Yesufu argued that while the APC has strong institutional backing, the ADC believes many Nigerians are increasingly seeking political alternatives. She framed the party’s support base as the broader population of citizens who feel dissatisfied with current governance structures.

Nigeria Is a Glitch’: Criticism of Governance and Security

Beyond party politics, Yesufu used the opportunity to voice strong criticism of the country’s current economic and security situation. She described Nigeria as a nation facing systemic problems, claiming that the state of governance has left many citizens feeling frustrated and uncertain about the future.

According to the activist, persistent economic hardship and insecurity have deepened public concern across several regions. She pointed to incidents of kidnapping, violence and instability as evidence that the country faces serious governance challenges.

Yesufu said the current situation has created a sense of national stagnation, arguing that key systems required for stability and economic growth are not functioning effectively. Her remarks reflect growing public debate about the performance of the federal government and the direction of national policy.

Online Registration and Growing Interest in ADC

Yesufu also addressed questions about the online registration system launched by the African Democratic Congress to attract new members nationwide. She dismissed suggestions that the party’s website had experienced technical difficulties following the launch.

According to her, the platform has been undergoing periodic improvements rather than suffering operational failures. She maintained that the registration process has remained accessible to Nigerians who wish to join the party.

Although she declined to disclose specific figures, Yesufu said the party has recorded a significant number of new registrations since the initiative began. She described the level of public engagement as encouraging and said party officials were “overwhelmed” by the interest shown so far.

The online membership drive is widely seen as part of the ADC’s broader strategy to expand its national presence ahead of the 2027 elections.
