Abia Lawmaker Alexander Ikwechegh Apologizes for Assaulting Bolt Driver

Abia lawmaker and House of Representatives member Alexander Ikwechegh publicly apologized for an altercation involving a Bolt driver who was delivering a package to him. Alexander Ikwechegh, who was seen in a viral video slapping and verbally assaulting the driver, acknowledged his actions fell below the standards expected of a public official. In a statement issued on Monday, he expressed regret, admitting his behavior did not reflect the responsibility entrusted to him as a representative.

“As a public servant, I recognize the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people,” he said. “My behaviour fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry.” Alexander Ikwechegh further stated that he regrets any harm and embarrassment his actions have caused the driver, his constituents, and the public at large.


Alexander Ikwechegh Commitment to Justice and Cooperation with Nigerian Police

Following the incident, Alexander Ikwechegh confirmed his cooperation with the Nigerian Police and pledged full support for their investigation. The lawmaker assured the public of his dedication to accountability and stated that he would cooperate with authorities to ensure that justice is served. “I want to assure the public that I am fully cooperating with the Nigerian Police investigation into this matter,” he remarked. “I support their efforts to ensure justice is served and that those responsible are held accountable.”

Additionally, Alexander Ikwechegh commended both his party and the Nigerian Police for promptly condemning his actions, which he believes underscores a collective commitment to upholding the law and protecting citizens’ rights. The Nigerian Police reportedly interrogated the lawmaker at its Maitama Divisional Headquarters, and the incident has since drawn widespread attention.

Alexander Ikwechegh’s statement was followed by a call for Nigerians to foster a culture of respect, tolerance, and mutual understanding. He expressed hope that the public would support him on his journey towards personal growth and healing. His statement concluded, “Thank you for your understanding, and I hope that you will join me on this journey towards healing and growth.”


Public Outcry and Police Investigation into the Incident

The altercation between Alexander Ikwechegh and the Bolt driver, identified as Abuwatseya, unfolded in the lawmaker’s Maitama residence in Abuja, with a video of the confrontation quickly going viral. The video captures Alexander Ikwechegh repeatedly slapping the driver and threatening to “make him disappear” without repercussions. The driver, who was visibly distressed, reportedly incurred the wrath of Ikwechegh after requesting that the lawmaker come outside to collect a package of snails he was delivering.

Public reactions to the video have been overwhelmingly critical, with many Nigerians condemning Alexander Ikwechegh’s actions as unbecoming of a public official. The Nigerian Police have also criticized the lawmaker for invoking the name of the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, during the confrontation, thereby bringing his name into disrepute.
