The state of Kwara is facing a growing challenge in the form of illegal mining activities, which has prompted concerted efforts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to combat this menace. The gravity of the situation was recently brought to light by intelligence reports, which exposed the operation of illegal mining sites scattered across the state.

According to the EFCC, their diligent efforts in curbing this illicit practice have resulted in the apprehension of no fewer than 80 individuals suspected of engaging in illegal mining. These suspects were found in possession of truckloads of assorted minerals, highlighting the extent of the problem.

“It is alarming the rate at which the resources of the state are being plundered by artisan/illegal miners,” remarked a concerned official. He emphasized that if these valuable resources were properly harnessed and channeled through legitimate means, they have the potential to sustain the state’s economy and transform it into a self-reliant entity.
