Zamfara State Governor Declares Crackdown On Illegal Mining To Curb Banditry

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, took a resolute stand on Saturday, issuing a firm ban on illicit mining activities while instructing law enforcement agencies to take rigorous measures against offenders.
Over the years, the prevalence of unlawful mining in the state has been closely linked to the rise in banditry and other criminal activities, as outlined in various reports.

Zamfara State Official statement

In an official statement provided by his spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, the Governor defended the prohibition, characterizing illegal mining as a “destructive activity.” He further asserted that the government’s actions were necessary to safeguard the safety and welfare of the people.
The statement emphasized, “Security forces have received explicit orders to take immediate and unhesitant action, including shoot-on-sight, against anyone discovered engaging in illegal mining.

“This directive is imperative to ensure the well-being and security of the honorable citizens of Zamfara and to discourage potential wrongdoers from committing such transgressions.
“It also aims to grant the government complete control over state resources and to obstruct activities that jeopardize the lives and assets of the populace.

“Illegal mining undeniably serves as a primary catalyst behind the pervasive banditry afflicting Zamfara State.
“We must take swift, decisive measures to suppress this menace and reinstate tranquility and security in our communities.
