Nigerian gospel singer and evangelist Tope Alabi has threatened legal action against individuals who publish or circulate statements she considers false and defamatory about her on social media and other platforms.
The warning was contained in a public notice issued by her solicitors, Oakmount Legal Practitioners, and shared on her Instagram page on Friday, October 23, 2026. The legal team stated that Alabi had instructed them to protect her reputation against publications they consider harmful to her personal, professional and spiritual standing.
The development has sent a strong message to social media users who sometimes treat viral allegations as entertainment, with the singer’s lawyers warning that creating damaging content is not the only activity that could attract legal consequences. Sharing or spreading such material may also create legal risks, depending on the circumstances.
TOPE ALABI’S LAWYERS WARN THOSE SPREADING ALLEGEDLY FALSE CLAIMS
According to the public notice, Tope Alabi has spent nearly three decades building a reputation based on integrity, honour and public trust. Her legal representatives expressed concern over statements they described as false, misleading and injurious that have allegedly been circulated across various platforms.
The warning covers different forms of communication, including written posts, videos, audio recordings and spoken statements. The lawyers also cautioned people against reposting, forwarding or otherwise amplifying material they consider defamatory.
In the age of social media, where a post can travel across hundreds of accounts within minutes, the warning serves as a reminder that pressing the share button does not automatically make someone immune from responsibility. A claim may begin with one account, but others can help it reach a much larger audience.
The lawyers further stated that anonymous or pseudonymous accounts do not automatically protect users from legal liability. They indicated that the singer could seek appropriate court orders to identify those responsible where legally permissible.
‘REMOVE THE CONTENT’: GOSPEL SINGER PREPARES TO DEFEND HER REPUTATION
The legal notice directed individuals who have already published the allegedly defamatory material to remove it and refrain from further circulation. However, the lawyers warned that deleting content would not automatically eliminate potential liability for its earlier publication.
The legal team also stated that possible remedies could include damages, injunctions, retractions and public apologies, depending on the circumstances and applicable law. The notice indicated that Tope Alabi had authorised legal proceedings against individuals whose conduct gives rise to an actionable claim.
However, the warning also clarified that it was not intended to suppress truthful statements, fair comment on matters of public interest or the lawful exercise of freedom of expression. This distinction is important because legitimate criticism and evidence-based reporting are not the same as publishing false allegations presented as facts.
For bloggers, content creators and ordinary social media users, the message is straightforward: verify information before publishing it, distinguish allegations from established facts and think carefully before sharing material that could damage another person’s reputation.
Tope Alabi has made her position clear, and the next developments will depend on whether any legal proceedings are initiated and how the matter unfolds. OGM News NG will continue to follow the story and provide updates on significant developments concerning the gospel singer and the wider entertainment industry.
