Soludo Declares Unprecedented Support for Tinubu’s Re-Election, Says No Nigerian President Has Enjoyed Such Consensus

Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Soludo, has declared that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu deserves a second term, claiming that Nigeria has never witnessed such a level of political and elite consensus behind a sitting president seeking re-election.

Soludo made the remarks on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, during the inauguration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council in Abuja. His endorsement attracted attention because he belongs to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), a party different from the APC, highlighting the growing involvement of politicians outside the ruling party in Tinubu’s re-election campaign.

SOLUDO DECLARES UNPRECEDENTED SUPPORT FOR TINUBU’S SECOND TERM

Speaking at the ceremony, Soludo argued that the number of governors and political leaders present demonstrated the level of support for Tinubu’s re-election bid.

He pointed to the presence of approximately 33 of Nigeria’s 36 state governors, describing the gathering as evidence of an unusually broad political alignment behind the President. Soludo also argued that APGA should be recognised among Nigeria’s progressive political parties and said his party supported the principles of national unity, security and shared prosperity.

The governor also defended Tinubu’s economic reform agenda, acknowledging that the policies had been difficult but maintaining that they were necessary. He argued that the next phase should focus on moving from economic stability and reform towards broader prosperity.

Soludo’s remarks effectively placed him among the prominent political figures from outside the APC publicly supporting Tinubu’s second-term ambition. However, his claim of unprecedented consensus remains his assessment of the political situation rather than proof that Nigerians generally share the same opinion about the President’s performance.

POLITICAL ELITE CONSENSUS: DOES IT REFLECT PUBLIC OPINION?

Soludo’s endorsement raises a wider question about the relationship between support among political leaders and the views of ordinary voters. The presence of governors from different political parties at a campaign event may demonstrate cooperation among political elites, but it does not automatically establish that the electorate has reached the same conclusion about the President’s performance.

Supporters of Tinubu’s re-election argue that continuity would give the administration an opportunity to consolidate its economic reforms and pursue its stated objectives. They point to the need for sustained policy implementation rather than repeatedly changing direction whenever a new administration takes office.

Critics, however, argue that the success of any government should ultimately be measured by its effects on citizens’ lives. Economic hardship, the cost of living, employment opportunities and insecurity remain important issues in the political debate surrounding the 2027 elections. Reuters has previously reported that Tinubu’s economic reforms improved investor confidence but also contributed to a severe cost-of-living crisis, while opposition figures have continued to challenge the administration’s record.

The debate, therefore, extends beyond the number of governors supporting the President. It concerns whether the administration can demonstrate measurable improvements in household welfare, economic opportunities and public security before Nigerians decide how they want to vote.

Soludo’s position also highlights the fluid nature of Nigerian political alliances, where party affiliation does not always prevent politicians from supporting candidates outside their own parties. Whether this cooperation translates into broader electoral support will be determined by voters, not simply by endorsements from prominent political figures. Governor Charles Soludo has described the support for President Tinubu’s re-election as unprecedented in Nigeria’s political history, citing the presence of approximately 33 governors at the APC Presidential Campaign Council inauguration. His remarks reinforce the visibility of cross-party support for Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.

Nevertheless, political endorsements and public opinion are not necessarily the same. As the election approaches, the administration’s record, the experience of ordinary Nigerians and the competing proposals of other political parties will remain central to the national debate. OGM News NG will continue to follow developments surrounding Tinubu’s re-election campaign, the positions of political leaders and the issues shaping Nigeria’s 2027 elections.
