Luis de la Fuente has effectively opened another chapter in the increasingly entertaining Lamine Yamal debate after declaring that the Barcelona and Spain star is “on his way to become an absolute football legend.” The Spain coach’s assessment arrives at a particularly interesting moment, with Yamal already collecting major trophies, breaking age-related records and putting himself firmly into the conversation surrounding the Ballon d’Or.
The statement may sound like another compliment for a spectacular young footballer, but it also raises the question that football fans have been asking with increasingly serious faces: Can anybody eventually build a legacy greater than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi? Yamal has certainly started running in that direction, although the distance between “future legend” and “greatest ever” remains considerably longer than one brilliant season.
De la Fuente Sees a Legend Taking Shape
De la Fuente’s praise is significant because he has not simply described Yamal as a talented youngster. The Spain coach has placed him on the road toward legendary status, while also making it clear that Spain has several players deserving of recognition. He previously argued that if Yamal were the only Spanish player in contention for the Ballon d’Or, he would regard him as the absolute best, but stressed that other Spanish players also deserve respect.
And the numbers make the manager’s enthusiasm understandable. Yamal became Barcelona’s youngest senior player, Spain’s youngest debutant and youngest scorer, while his Euro 2024 campaign produced another collection of historic milestones. By 2026, he had added a World Cup title to his European Championship triumph, becoming the youngest player to win both competitions.
At this point, football is almost running out of age-related records to hand him. Yamal has already reached milestones that established stars spent entire careers approaching, and his 2026 form has kept the conversation alive. Recent reports have him producing decisive performances for Spain, including a brace in the 4–1 victory over Croatia, while his club numbers continue to show that his development is not merely based on hype.
Ronaldo and Messi Left a Very Large Mountain
Yet this is where the satire must temporarily remove its sunglasses and become serious. Becoming a legend is one thing; surpassing Messi and Ronaldo is another footballing mountain entirely. Their legacies were built not simply on spectacular beginnings but on extraordinary longevity, relentless statistical production, domestic and international success, Champions League dominance, individual awards and the ability to remain among the world’s elite for well over a decade.
Yamal has already given himself an impressive opening chapter. Barcelona records, international trophies and his extraordinary teenage performances suggest that the ceiling could be extremely high. But consistency will ultimately decide the argument. He will have to remain healthy, continue improving, adapt when opponents learn how to defend him, handle pressure, maintain motivation and perform at an elite level through his twenties and beyond.
There is also the small matter of surviving football’s favourite habit: comparing every brilliant teenager with Messi and Ronaldo before the teenager has even finished growing into his career. Yamal is already producing numbers and moments that justify serious discussion, but history does not award the title of greatest player because someone looked extraordinary at 19. It awards it after the receipts have accumulated for years.
For now, therefore, Yamal is on the route, but he has not reached the destination. De la Fuente may already see a legend emerging, and the evidence suggests that the Spanish coach is not making an unreasonable prediction. But if Yamal wants to move beyond the enormous shadows cast by Messi and Ronaldo, he will need to turn exceptional talent into exceptional consistency for a remarkably long time. OGM News FC will be watching to see whether the teenager who has already broken so many records can eventually break the biggest record of all: convincing football history that a new name belongs above the two giants who defined an era.
