Syria is warning that any attempt by Israel to further expand its control or occupation around the Golan Heights could trigger a major confrontation, according to the material provided to OGM News NG. The warning comes amid continuing tensions in southern Syria, where Israeli forces have expanded their military presence beyond the previously monitored separation area since the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s government. European Union asylum analysts have documented Israeli advances into parts of Quneitra and western Daraa, while reports have also detailed continued Israeli military activity in southern Syria.
The Golan question remains one of the region’s most sensitive territorial disputes. Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria in 1967 and formally extended its laws there in 1981, a move rejected by the United Nations. More recently, Israel has approved a major development plan for Katzrin in the occupied territory, with Human Rights Watch reporting that the plan aims to bring thousands of additional Israeli families to the area by 2030.
Syria Draws a Red Line Around the Golan
The warning comes as Israeli forces continue operating in territory beyond the Golan Heights itself. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said in July that Israeli forces would remain in areas described by Israel as security zones inside Syrian territory “until further notice,” adding another layer of tension to an already complicated security situation.
For Damascus, the issue is not simply another border disagreement. The government has repeatedly described Israeli military activity in southern Syria as a violation of its sovereignty. In June, Syrian authorities condemned Israeli attacks near the Golan Heights after residents were forced to flee their homes.
A Bigger Conflict Is the Fear Hanging Over the Region
The latest warning arrives as international concern grows over the possibility that continued territorial expansion could turn localized confrontations into a wider regional crisis. Human Rights Watch reported in April that Israel had approved a $334 million plan to expand Katzrin and attract 3,000 new settler families to the occupied Golan by 2030.
Satirically speaking, the Golan Heights may soon need its own diplomatic emergency sign: “Please resolve your territorial dispute before adding another floor.” With military positions, raids and competing territorial claims already complicating the situation, the last thing the region needs is another disagreement arriving with a suitcase full of ammunition.
The situation remains highly sensitive, and a major war is not inevitable simply because threats are being issued. However, continued Israeli expansion and Syrian resistance could increase the danger of further confrontation if diplomatic channels fail to contain the dispute. OGM News NG will continue watching developments around the Golan Heights and will bring readers further updates as this increasingly tense regional story unfolds.
