Families of prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members are facing serious anxiety after abductors reportedly demanded a whopping N950 million ransom for 19 graduates kidnapped along the Owerri–Onitsha Road in Imo State. The victims were travelling from Ibadan towards NYSC orientation camps when gunmen reportedly attacked two buses around Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area.
NYSC Kidnap: Abductors Demand N950m Ransom for 19 Graduates
According to the report, the 19 prospective corps members were travelling towards Abia and Akwa Ibom for their orientation exercise when the attackers intercepted the buses. The situation quickly changed what should have been an ordinary journey to national service into a frightening ordeal for the affected families.
The ransom demand reportedly works out to about N50 million per person, meaning families suddenly found themselves looking at figures that could make even a calculator request emergency leave. Some relatives were reportedly contacted by the abductors, deepening the fear and uncertainty surrounding the incident.
NYSC Kidnap:Security Operatives Join The Search, Families Join The Waiting
The Imo State Police Command said security agencies launched search-and-rescue operations after the attack. Police also reported that 10 victims had been rescued, while the exact number of people still unaccounted for was being verified.
Meanwhile, the reported ransom demand has added another layer of pressure to an already painful situation. Parents who expected their children to start NYSC service are instead waiting for reassuring phone calls, while security agencies continue efforts to locate those still missing and apprehend the suspected attackers. The incident has also revived concerns about the safety of young Nigerians travelling to orientation camps.
The matter is bigger than one journey because prospective corps members routinely travel long distances during mobilisation periods. With this latest incident coming after other reported kidnappings involving NYSC members, the safety of interstate travel for young graduates remains a major concern that deserves serious attention.
For now, families are hoping that the rescue operation will bring everybody home safely and that the frightening ransom demand will not become another chapter in Nigeria’s growing kidnapping story.
