Ibadan passengers reportedly experienced a frightening moment when a commercial bus driver identified as Ibrahim suddenly slumped and died while conveying passengers along the Apete–Sango route. The unfortunate incident reportedly happened around 6:30 p.m. near Apete Garage in Ido Local Government Area of Oyo State.
According to reports, the bus had crossed Apete Bridge while returning from Sango with passengers on board when it suddenly stopped moving. Ibrahim reportedly got down from the driver’s seat to inspect what could be wrong with the vehicle, but while checking the problem, he suddenly collapsed.
Bus Develops Fault, Driver Checks It — Then Tragedy Strikes
Eyewitness accounts reported that some passengers also came down to help with the situation after the vehicle stopped. Ibrahim was reportedly trying to get the bus moving again when he suddenly slumped.
Other commercial drivers, residents and passengers reportedly gathered around the scene after the incident. Efforts were reportedly made to get medical assistance, but the driver was said to have died before he could be taken to a hospital.
For passengers, what started as the familiar Nigerian transport drama of “driver, something dey wrong with motor” reportedly turned into a heartbreaking situation within moments. One minute, everybody was waiting for the vehicle to continue its journey; the next, attention had shifted from the bus fault to the driver’s condition.
Cause of Death Remains Unknown
The exact cause of Ibrahim’s death had not been ascertained when the reports were filed. It would therefore be premature to speculate about what medical condition may have caused him to collapse.
The Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, Olayinka Ayanlade, reportedly said the incident had not been formally reported to the police at the time he was contacted. This means further official information may still emerge as authorities or the driver’s family provide more details.
The incident has once again highlighted the unpredictable risks faced by commercial drive, passengers and other road users. While the cause remains unknown, the sad development serves as a reminder that a routine journey can sometimes change within seconds.
