Pastor Odumeje Fires at Nigerian Pastors: "A Pastor Must Rebuke Bad Government, Not Celebrate It"

Popular Onitsha-based cleric Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere (Pastor Odumeje) has stirred widespread reactions after publicly criticizing what he described as the silence of some Nigerian pastors in the face of poor governance. In a recent sermon, Odumeje argued that the biblical responsibility of pastors is to speak truth to power rather than seek favour from political leaders.

His comments came days after Enoch Adeboye remarked that President Bola Tinubu was “doing his best” to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges, a statement that generated public debate and prompted contrasting reactions from various Nigerians, including Odumeje.

Odumeje: Pastors Should Speak Truth, Not Seek Political Favour

During the sermon, Pastor Odumeje said he was disappointed with what he described as the attitude of many church leaders toward government. According to him, pastors are called to rebuke bad leadership whenever necessary instead of remaining silent or appearing to benefit from those in authority.
“I don’t want to talk about Pastor Adeboye because do you know what it means to be a pastor? A pastor should rebuke a bad government,” he declared, adding that political office holders are elected to serve the people and should remain accountable for the nation’s resources. His remarks have since circulated widely across social media, sparking intense conversations about the role of religious leaders in national affairs.

Governance, Accountability and a Nation’s Frustration

Beyond his criticism of church leaders, Pastor Odumeje accused politicians of mismanaging public resources while many Nigerians continue to face economic hardship. He argued that government officials often celebrate projects funded by taxpayers as though they were personal achievements, insisting that citizens must become more aware of their constitutional rights and demand accountability from elected representatives.

The outspoken cleric also referenced Nnamdi Kanu while discussing freedom of expression and governance, suggesting that outspoken critics frequently come under pressure from authorities. Those comments have added another layer of controversy to an already heated national conversation about governance, democracy and the relationship between religious institutions and political leadership.

Pastor Odumeje vs Nigeria’s Political Class: The Sermon That Has Set Social Media Ablaze

Odumeje’s remarks have reignited discussions over whether religious leaders should publicly challenge governments or maintain a more cautious approach when addressing political issues. While his blunt criticism has earned praise from some Nigerians and criticism from others, it has once again placed the intersection of faith, leadership and accountability at the centre of national discourse. OGM News NG will continue to monitor reactions from religious leaders, government officials and the wider public as the story develops.
