The PDP Crisis has entered another critical phase after the Court of Appeal nullified key aspects of a Federal High Court judgment that had recognised a factional caretaker committee within the Peoples Democratic Party. The ruling has not only overturned a significant legal victory for one faction but has also revived lingering questions about legitimacy, internal democracy and the party’s ability to resolve its prolonged leadership conflict. As political stakeholders digest the implications, attention is shifting toward what the judgment means for the future balance of power within Nigeria’s main opposition party.
Fresh Court Ruling Deepens PDP Leadership Crisis
The dispute centered on a Federal High Court decision delivered in January that recognised a caretaker committee associated with Abdurahman Mohammed and Samuel Anyanwu. However, the Court of Appeal concluded that the trial court ventured beyond the actual requests made by parties in the case, granting reliefs that had not been sought during proceedings.
In a unanimous judgment delivered by Justice Uchechukwu Onyemenam and supported by Justices Mohammed Mustapha and Okon Abang, the appellate court held that such judicial overreach could not stand. The court emphasized that judges are bound by the issues and reliefs presented before them and cannot create new remedies independently. As a result, the recognition of the disputed Caretaker Committee was declared legally unsustainable.
PDP Crisis and the Weight of Supreme Court Authority
A major factor influencing the judgment was the Supreme Court’s earlier decision nullifying the PDP convention held in Ibadan in November 2025. According to the Court of Appeal, once the convention itself was declared void, any structures, organs or committees created through that process automatically lost their legal foundation.
The ruling highlights a broader reality facing the PDP Crisis. While the party has spent years battling internal divisions, competing leadership claims and factional disagreements, the courts have increasingly become the arena where these disputes are settled. Political analysts note that repeated judicial interventions may offer legal clarity, but they also expose the depth of unresolved tensions within the party. The latest judgment effectively closes one legal pathway for the faction involved while potentially forcing party leaders to seek political rather than judicial solutions.
The latest decision serves as another reminder that legal legitimacy and political legitimacy do not always move in the same direction. While the Court of Appeal has now clarified the status of the disputed Caretaker Committee, the broader PDP Crisis remains a significant challenge for the opposition party. OGM News Nigeria will continue monitoring developments as party stakeholders respond to the ruling and chart their next course in a dispute that has already reshaped the party’s leadership landscape.
