All Progressives Congress (APC) has rescheduled its governorship primary elections in Bauchi State and Kwara State, shifting the exercises to Friday, May 22, 2026, in a move that has already generated fresh political calculations within the ruling party. The party also announced that State House of Assembly primary elections for Maradun I and Maradun II constituencies in Zamfara State will now take place on Sunday, May 24, 2026.
The announcement, made through an official statement released Thursday evening, stated that the changes were approved by the party’s National Working Committee after extensive consultations with relevant stakeholders. Although the APC described the decision as part of efforts to ensure a peaceful and credible process, the sudden adjustment has triggered renewed speculation about internal negotiations and strategic alignments ahead of the elections.
APC Primaries Outcome
According to the statement issued by All Progressives Congress, the rescheduling affects only the governorship primaries in Bauchi and Kwara states, as well as the assembly primaries for Maradun I and Maradun II constituencies in Zamfara State. The party stressed that no other ongoing primary elections nationwide were affected by the changes.
The APC explained that the decision followed consultations with stakeholders and was intended to guarantee transparency, orderliness, and credibility in the conduct of the primaries. Party officials have repeatedly emphasized the importance of peaceful internal elections as preparations intensify ahead of broader electoral contests across the country.
Political observers note that governorship primaries within major Nigerian political parties often involve intense negotiations among influential blocs, governors, lawmakers, and party leaders. In some cases, postponements are interpreted as attempts to resolve disputes, finalize consensus arrangements, or reduce tensions among competing aspirants.
Rescheduling APC Primaries
The latest APC rescheduling comes at a politically sensitive period as aspirants continue consultations and mobilization efforts across several states. In Bauchi State and Kwara State, the governorship races are already attracting heightened attention due to the strategic importance of both states within Nigeria’s political landscape.
Meanwhile, the assembly primaries in Maradun I and Maradun II constituencies in Zamfara State are also expected to generate significant local interest, especially as internal party competition remains active in parts of the North-West region. Analysts say even limited scheduling adjustments can influence campaign coordination, alliance-building, and delegate mobilization among party aspirants.
Despite the controversy and speculation often associated with postponements, the APC insists the changes are purely administrative and aimed at strengthening the credibility of its internal democratic process. Party leaders are expected to continue consultations in the coming days to prevent divisions and maintain stability ahead of the primaries.
For now, attention remains fixed on how the APC will manage competing interests within the affected states as the new dates approach. OGM News Nigeria understands that party stakeholders and aspirants are already recalibrating strategies, with expectations that the rescheduled APC primaries could play a significant role in shaping political alignments ahead of future electoral battles.
