Hunter Biden 1st Indictment: Marks Historic First for Sitting Presidents’ Children

Hunter Biden Indicted On Firearm Charges

Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, has found himself indicted by special counsel David Weiss. The charges stem from his connection to a firearm purchase dating back to 2018. This marks the first time in U.S. history that the Justice Department has charged the child of a sitting president.

The indictment includes three charges against Hunter Biden, which are making false statements on a federal firearms form and possession of a firearm as a prohibited person. These legal troubles have taken a surprising twist after his initial plea deal fell apart, potentially setting the stage for a dramatic trial in the midst of his father’s 2024 reelection campaign.

Initially, the White House had hoped that the legal drama surrounding Hunter would conclude during the summer. However, a plea deal negotiated with Weiss to resolve the matter without charges collapsed under the scrutiny of a federal judge. Adding to the complexity, House Republicans have also initiated an impeachment inquiry into the president, directly related to Mr. Biden’s business activities.

Court documents reveal that a summons was issued on Thursday, summoning Hunter to appear in court for an initial hearing on the charges. Nonetheless, the date and location of this initial appearance remain uncertain.

Hunter’s legal representative, Abbe Lowell, strongly criticized the indictment, labeling it as politically motivated. The core of Mr Biden’s firearm-related legal issues revolves around a firearm purchase he made in October 2018. During the acquisition of a revolver at a Delaware gun shop, he provided false information on a federal form. Specifically, he falsely declared that he was not using, nor addicted to, any illegal drugs, despite grappling with a crack cocaine addiction at the time.

The indictment states, “Hunter Biden provided a written statement on Form 4473 certifying he was not an unlawful user of, and addicted to, any stimulant, narcotic drug, and any other controlled substance when, in fact, as he knew, that statement was false and fictitious.”

This legal development surrounding Hunter Biden’s firearm purchase has thrust him into the spotlight, marking a historic chapter in the annals of U.S. presidential history. As the legal proceedings unfold, the impact on President Biden’s political future remains uncertain.
