ADC Declares,No Individual Will Determine Next Rivers Governor

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Rivers State has reaffirmed that the power to choose the next governor lies solely with the electorate, dismissing any notion that a single political figure can dictate the outcome. The party’s position comes amid growing political discussions ahead of the 2027 governorship election, particularly following remarks linked to Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

In a statement that underscores democratic principles, the ADC emphasised that leadership selection must remain a collective decision shaped by voters rather than political influence or personal allegiance. The party also signalled its intention to play a more prominent role in the evolving political landscape of Rivers State.

ADC Insists on Democratic Process

Speaking in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State Chairman of the ADC, Chukwudi Dimkpa, stressed that the emergence of a governor is determined through democratic participation. He noted that elections remain the only legitimate pathway for leadership selection and should not be overshadowed by individual interests.

Dimkpa’s remarks appear to respond indirectly to recent political statements suggesting the need for a loyal successor. While such opinions have generated debate, the ADC maintained that the will of the people must take precedence over political calculations or personal networks.

He further stated that the party is strengthening its internal processes to ensure fairness, transparency, and credibility. According to him, the ADC aims to build trust among voters by presenting itself as a viable alternative grounded in democratic ideals.

Balancing Zoning with Competence

Addressing the issue of zoning, Dimkpa acknowledged its historical role in maintaining political balance between riverine and upland communities in Rivers State. However, he emphasised that competence, leadership capacity, and integrity should remain central considerations in selecting candidates.

The ADC chairman explained that the party would adopt a consultative approach in choosing its governorship flagbearer. This process, he said, would involve broad engagement with stakeholders to ensure inclusivity and acceptance across different communities.

He added that while zoning may guide discussions, it should not overshadow the need for effective governance. The party’s priority, he noted, is to identify candidates capable of addressing the state’s pressing challenges and delivering measurable progress.

Focus on Governance and Voter Power

The ADC also highlighted key issues affecting residents, including insecurity, economic development, and governance. Dimkpa stressed that these concerns must shape the criteria for leadership selection ahead of the 2027 elections.

He reiterated that voters remain the ultimate decision-makers in any electoral process and urged political actors to respect democratic norms. According to him, sustainable political development depends on allowing the electorate’s voice to prevail without undue interference.

As political activities gradually intensify, the ADC said it would continue to strengthen its structures and promote unity within its ranks. The party expressed confidence that a transparent and inclusive approach would enhance democratic practice and provide Rivers residents with credible leadership options.
