The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has released updated lists for its convention planning committee and subcommittees ahead of its scheduled national convention on April 14, 2026. The move, according to party officials, is aimed at strengthening internal coordination and ensuring a credible and seamless convention process, despite mounting internal tensions and regulatory challenges.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC emphasized that the revised committee structure reflects its commitment to transparency and organisational efficiency as preparations intensify. The updated list, signed by National Organising Secretary Chinedu Idigo, outlines key appointments tasked with overseeing the convention proceedings.
Strengthening Internal Structures Ahead of Convention
The ADC stated that the release of the updated committee lists forms a crucial part of its broader preparations for the national convention. Party leaders noted that careful selection of committee members is intended to enhance operational effectiveness and foster confidence among stakeholders.
At the centre of the planning structure is the National Convention Central Coordination Committee, chaired by former governor Liyel Imoke, with Aminu Tambuwal serving as deputy chairman. Their leadership is expected to guide the convention process and ensure adherence to party guidelines.
The party also called on all appointed members to carry out their responsibilities with diligence and integrity. Stakeholders and party supporters were urged to cooperate fully to guarantee a smooth and credible exercise.
ADC Leadership Crisis and INEC Recognition Dispute
The latest development comes against the backdrop of an ongoing leadership crisis within the ADC, which has created uncertainty around the legitimacy of certain party structures. The situation has been further complicated by the stance of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which has declined to recognise the faction led by David Mark pending the resolution of court cases.
These legal proceedings, whose hearing dates reportedly coincide with the scheduled convention, have raised questions about the timing and validity of the exercise. Analysts suggest that the outcome of the court rulings could significantly influence the party’s leadership trajectory.
Despite these challenges, ADC officials have maintained that the convention will proceed as planned, insisting that internal processes must continue uninterrupted in line with the party’s constitution.
Focus on 2027 Elections and Party Reorganisation
The ADC has reiterated its determination to move forward with congresses and the national convention as part of a broader strategy to reposition itself ahead of the 2027 general elections. Party leaders believe that restructuring efforts are essential to strengthening grassroots support and enhancing electoral competitiveness.
Observers note that the ability of the ADC to navigate its internal disputes while maintaining organisational momentum will be critical in determining its future relevance in Nigeria’s political landscape. The convention is expected to serve as a defining moment for the party’s cohesion and strategic direction.
As preparations continue, attention remains fixed on whether the ADC can successfully reconcile its internal divisions while meeting regulatory expectations and delivering a credible convention.
