ADC Raises Alarm Over El-Rufai’s Detention, Questions Nigeria’s Democratic Direction

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of steering Nigeria toward authoritarian governance, citing the continued detention of former Kaduna State governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai as evidence of what it described as a “drift toward dictatorship.”

At the centre of the controversy is the claim that El-Rufai has remained in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for over 30 days without formal charges or arraignment in court. The ADC argues that this situation raises serious concerns about respect for the rule of law, potential political interference, and the broader implications for Nigeria’s democratic process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Allegations of Rights Violations and Political Pressure

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC condemned the prolonged detention as a violation of fundamental human rights. The party maintained that El-Rufai’s continued custody without due process undermines constitutional guarantees, including the right to liberty and fair hearing.

According to the statement, El-Rufai had initially honoured an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) before being released, only to be re-arrested shortly after by the ICPC. The ADC claimed that more than a month later, he remains detained without formal charges and under conditions that allegedly limit access to family members and medical care.

The party further alleged that the former governor has been subjected to pressure to relinquish his political affiliations as a condition for regaining his freedom. It described such actions as a misuse of state institutions, warning that they erode democratic norms and create a climate of political intimidation.

ADC Call for Presidential Accountability and Rule of Law

The ADC directed its criticism at President Tinubu, urging him to demonstrate a clear commitment to constitutional governance. It argued that if the administration intends to uphold democratic principles, it must ensure that all actions by state agencies align strictly with the law.

The party also called on key officials, including the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the leadership of the ICPC, to ensure immediate compliance with constitutional provisions. It stressed that adherence to due process is essential for maintaining public trust in government institutions.

Framing the issue as one that extends beyond an individual case, the ADC warned that the situation could set a precedent affecting all Nigerians. It urged citizens across political, regional, and religious divides to remain vigilant in defending democratic values and resisting any perceived erosion of civil liberties.

Broader Implications for Nigeria’s Democracy

The party emphasised that the controversy surrounding El-Rufai’s detention reflects deeper concerns about governance and political freedoms in Nigeria. It warned that failure to address the matter transparently could have lasting consequences for the country’s democratic reputation, both domestically and internationally.

The ADC also indicated that it may escalate the issue beyond Nigeria’s borders if the situation remains unresolved, suggesting that international attention could be drawn to what it considers a breach of democratic standards.

Concluding its statement, the party demanded either the immediate release of El-Rufai or his prompt arraignment before a court of competent jurisdiction. It maintained that adherence to the rule of law is non-negotiable and essential for preserving Nigeria’s democratic integrity.
