Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is facing a deepening leadership crisis as the faction led by Tanimu Turaki prepares to challenge a recent Court of Appeal ruling at the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The move follows a decision by the Court of Appeal of Nigeria, which invalidated the convention that produced Turaki and other members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), stating that the process did not comply with legal requirements.
Despite the setback, the Turaki-led PDP leadership insists it remains determined to contest the ruling and has begun preparations to seek a final legal determination from the nation’s highest court. The development has intensified internal tensions within the PDP and could shape its organisational direction ahead of future political contests.
Appeal Court Judgment Deepens Internal PDP Dispute
The controversy stems from a ruling delivered by a panel of the Court of Appeal presided over by Mohammed Ambi-Usi Danjuma. The panel upheld earlier judgments of the Federal High Court delivered by James Omotosho and Inyang Ekwo Lifu, which had raised questions about the legality of the PDP’s convention.
The appellate court also affirmed the suspension of the PDP’s National Legal Adviser and, by extension, other key party officers including the National Secretary and National Organising Secretary. In addition, the appeal challenging interlocutory orders earlier issued by Hauwa Abdulmalik was dismissed.
Legal analysts say the judgment effectively undermines the authority of the Turaki-led National Working Committee by declaring the process that produced it invalid. This has created uncertainty within the PDP administrative structure and sparked renewed debate among stakeholders about the legitimacy of its leadership.
Turaki Faction Insists on Supreme Court Appeal
In response to the ruling, the Turaki faction announced that it has instructed its legal team to immediately initiate an appeal at the Supreme Court. The announcement was made in a statement issued on Monday by the faction’s National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong.
According to the statement, the PDP faction believes the appellate court decision could cause significant hardship for party members if implemented without further legal review. The leadership therefore argues that only the Supreme Court can deliver a final and conclusive judgment capable of restoring clarity to the PDP internal governance.
Ememobong also urged PDP members nationwide to remain united while the legal battle continues. He expressed optimism that the apex court would resolve the dispute swiftly in the broader interest of Nigeria’s democratic system.
Political Implications for Nigeria’s Opposition
The dispute highlights ongoing internal challenges within the Peoples Democratic Party, which remains one of Nigeria’s most prominent opposition political platforms. Political observers note that prolonged leadership conflicts could weaken the party’s organisational strength and public perception.
The Turaki-led faction has framed the crisis as a struggle to “rescue” the PDP from what it describes as individuals acting as agents of the government while posing as opposition leaders. While the claim has not been independently verified, it underscores the intensity of the political battle currently unfolding within the party.
As the matter heads to the Supreme Court, attention will focus on whether the judiciary’s final verdict can bring stability to the PDP’s leadership structure and prevent further fragmentation within the party.
