Genesis of Wike’s Discord with PDP: The Unfolding of Southern Governors’ Demands

The genesis of the clash between Nyesom Wike, the outgoing Governor of Rivers State, and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) can be traced back to the prelude of the 2023 general elections. Stemming from the Asaba Declaration by the Southern Governors Forum, a call was made for a Southern presidency to ensure equity and national cohesion, following eight years of Northern leadership under President Muhammadu Buhari. Despite this, the PDP held an open contest, resulting in Atiku emerging as the winner while Wike secured the second position.

Wike’s discontentment brewed when Atiku overlooked him and instead selected Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta as his running mate. This decision, coupled with Wike’s insistence on the resignation of the party’s national chairman, Mr Ayu, due to Atiku’s Northern origin, escalated tensions. Wike argued against the northernization of the party while expecting Southern support, which was not met with adequate leadership from Atiku.

Escalation and the Tinubu Factor: PDP’s Internal Fracture

The crisis deepened as Wike’s supporters, including Governors Makinde, Ortom, and others, formed an anti-party faction, demanding the resignation of Mr Ayu and the appointment of a Southern chairman within the PDP. Enter Bola Tinubu, who capitalized on the discord, engaging in divide-and-rule tactics. Meeting Wike on two occasions abroad, Tinubu successfully swayed Wike to his side, ultimately securing Rivers State’s support for the APC.

Accusations surfaced against Wike, branding him as obstructive to opposing candidates’ campaigns in Rivers State, further intensifying the rift within the PDP. Governor Makinde’s refusal to partake in rallies involving Atiku due to his allegiance to the G5 further exacerbated the party’s internal strife. The ripple effect was felt in states like Oyo and Ekiti, where Tinubu garnered support even from prominent PDP members like Ayo Fayose.

Despite Wike’s continued anti-party activities, the PDP has been unable to take unified action against him and the rest of the G5 governors, exacerbating the internal fragmentation within the party.
