Wike Discovered Me’: Fubara Dedicates Award to FCT Minister Amid Rivers Political Reconciliation

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has dedicated his “Man of the Year” award to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in a symbolic gesture that signals a possible turning point in the prolonged political crisis that has shaped governance in Rivers State.

Speaking at the New Telegraph Award/Dinner Night in Lagos on Friday, the Governor Fubara reflected on his leadership journey, the pressures of political survival, and the value of peace. His remarks, widely viewed as conciliatory, come amid growing indications that tensions between him and his predecessor may be easing following intervention by President Bola Tinubu.

Governor Fubara’s Message of Peace and Political Survival

Governor Fubara described the award as a shared honour for those who had stood by him during what he called a period of “special pain.” He acknowledged that his leadership style had been interpreted differently by observers but maintained that his decisions were guided by the need for stability.

“Some persons describe it as weakness, while others say it is strength, but I chose for a lot of reasons to be weak — weak because I want peace,” the Governor Fubara said. He added that what critics termed weakness was, in his view, a strategic choice to protect the interests of the state and the nation.

According to him, “Weakness is a virtue. It pays at the right time.” Governor Fubara thanked his family and the people of Rivers State for what he described as their patience and maturity during months of political uncertainty.

Dedication to Wike and Signals of Reconciliation

In a remark that has stirred political discussions across the state, Governor Fubara directly dedicated the award to the FCT Minister, referring to him as the individual who “discovered” him politically.

“I dedicate this award to somebody who discovered me, not minding the situation — the Honourable Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike,” he stated. “It is the discovery that gave me this loudness.”

The comment follows a series of recent developments suggesting a thaw in relations between both leaders. After a reported intervention at the Presidential Villa in Abuja by President Tinubu, Wike expressed optimism that the reconciliation process would be lasting. He described the President’s involvement as fatherly and necessary in resolving differences between the executive and the legislature in Rivers State.

Earlier, during an inspection of the Port Harcourt Ring Road project, Governor Fubara publicly acknowledged Wike’s role in conceiving the initiative, referring to him as “My Oga” — a remark that further reinforced perceptions of rapprochement.

Crisis, Division and Emerging Stability

The political rift between Governor Fubara and Minister Wike began shortly after Fubara assumed office in May 2023. The disagreement led to divisions within the Rivers State House of Assembly, impeachment threats, and extended governance uncertainty.

The standoff drew national attention as it tested the cohesion of the state’s political structure. Allegiances within the legislature shifted, and the political atmosphere in the oil-rich state remained tense for several months.

However, recent actions — including the reported submission of a fresh list of commissioner-nominees to the Assembly — suggest deliberate efforts toward stabilisation and reconciliation. Political observers note that the governor’s award dedication may represent not only personal gratitude but also a strategic step in consolidating peace within the state’s political framework.
