President Bola Tinubu’s decision to travel to Europe has drawn sharp criticism from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), with the party describing the move as insensitive at a time of heightened insecurity and public anxiety across Nigeria. The criticism was articulated by the ADC’s spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, who faulted what he described as the President’s silence and absence in the face of grave national challenges.
Abdullahi’s remarks came against the backdrop of renewed security threats, including a deadly bomb blast in Zamfara State and widespread concern following reports of a foreign military strike on Nigerian soil. The ADC spokeperson argued that Nigerians were expecting reassurance and leadership from the President when news of his departure broke, rather than what appeared to be a retreat from the country during a moment of distress.
ADC Raises Alarm Over Leadership and Security Silence
In a statement titled “PBAT’s Lack of Care Scary”, which he shared on his official X account, The ADC questioned the timing and symbolism of the President’s foreign trip. The ADC described the development as alarming, noting that it occurred while citizens were grappling with fear, uncertainty, and unanswered questions about national security.
According to Abdullahi, the President had not publicly addressed the latest bomb blast in Zamfara State, nor had he offered clarity on the reported foreign military action within Nigerian territory. He argued that such silence, combined with physical absence from the country, sent the wrong signal to a population seeking reassurance and decisive leadership.
The ADC spokesperson stressed that leadership during crises requires presence, communication, and empathy. He warned that prolonged silence on security matters could deepen public mistrust and fuel anxiety, especially at a time when Nigerians are already on edge due to persistent insecurity.
Presidency Defends Trip, Cites Global Engagement
The Presidency, however, has maintained that the President’s trip is both scheduled and official in nature. According to a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu departed Lagos on Sunday for Europe as part of his end-of-year break, ahead of an official engagement in Abu Dhabi.
Onanuga explained that the President is expected to participate in the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Summit, following an invitation from the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The summit, scheduled for early January, is a major global platform that brings together leaders from government, business, and civil society to discuss sustainable development.
The 2026 edition of the summit will be held under the theme “The Nexus of Next: All Systems Go”, with discussions focusing on innovation, finance, and people as drivers of sustainable growth. The Presidency insists that Tinubu’s participation aligns with Nigeria’s broader economic and development interests on the global stage.
Growing Debate Over Priorities and Governance
Despite the Presidency’s explanation, the criticism from the ADC has intensified public debate over leadership priorities and crisis management. Abdullahi maintained that while international engagements are important, they should not come at the expense of addressing urgent domestic challenges, particularly those affecting lives and national sovereignty.
He argued that Nigerians were not opposed to diplomatic or sustainability engagements but expected the President to first speak directly to the nation on pressing security issues before embarking on foreign travel. For the opposition party, the episode underscores what it sees as a troubling disconnect between the government and the realities faced by ordinary citizens.
As insecurity continues to dominate national discourse, the controversy surrounding the President’s trip reflects broader questions about governance, accountability, and responsiveness in moments of national emergency.
