The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, has described himself as the most abused politician in Nigeria, second only to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing persistent political attacks linked to disagreements and shifting alliances. He made the assertion while reaffirming his unwavering support for President Tinubu, insisting that his stance has remained consistent since the 2023 general elections.
Wike spoke on Saturday at Ochigba Community in Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers State during a thanksgiving service held at the country home of the Chairman of the South-South Development Commission (SSDC) and former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Chibudom Nwuche. The event drew political leaders and stakeholders from across the local government area.
In his remarks, the former Rivers State governor said political abuse often follows the failure of some actors to honour agreements, adding that such conduct has become common in the country’s political space. Wike maintained that despite criticism and attacks, his political decisions are guided by conviction rather than convenience.
Political Allegations and Claims of Consistency by Wike
Addressing political leaders at a brief meeting following the thanksgiving service, Wike said his loyalty to President Tinubu has been misinterpreted and unfairly criticised by opponents. Wike argued that many of those who now publicly profess support for the President were absent during critical moments of the 2023 elections.
According to him, his political position has remained stable before, during, and after the elections, a consistency he said has made him a target for abuse. Wike noted that political disagreements should be resolved through dialogue and adherence to agreements, rather than through public insults and personal attacks.
He further stated that political leadership requires courage to take difficult decisions, stressing that disagreement does not necessarily equate to disloyalty. He urged political actors to focus on governance and development rather than sustained personal conflicts.
Rivers Politics and Legislative Defections
The FCT minister also touched on recent political developments in Rivers State, disclosing that the defection of 17 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) occurred without his consultation.
Wike said the lawmakers’ decision underscored the independent choices political actors make within a democratic setting, even when such moves generate controversy. He emphasised that consultation remains important in politics but acknowledged that individuals ultimately act based on their personal calculations.
Wike cautioned against the politicisation of legislative decisions in ways that could deepen divisions, calling instead for stability and respect for institutional processes within the state.
Continued Support From Rivers Leaders
At the event, Rt. Hon. Chibudom Nwuche said he and other political leaders in Rivers State would continue to support Wike, describing him as a key political figure whose influence remains significant in the state and beyond.
Nwuche praised Wike’s role in national politics and governance, noting that sustained support for political allies is essential for continuity and development. He added that Rivers State leaders value loyalty and consistency, qualities he said Wike has demonstrated over time.
The thanksgiving service concluded with calls for unity among political leaders and a renewed focus on development in the South-South region.
