Amaechi Declares Tinubu Defeatable in 2027, Urges Nigerians to End Voter Apathy

Former Rivers State Governor and 2027 presidential hopeful, Rotimi Amaechi, has urged Nigerians to prepare for an active and united participation in the next general elections, stressing that President Bola Tinubu can be defeated if citizens turn out en masse to vote.

Amaechi, a chieftain of the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), made this statement at the fifth anniversary lecture of First Daily newspaper in Abuja on Monday. The theme of the event was “2027: How Can We Make Our Votes Count?”

In his goodwill message, Amaechi blamed voter apathy for enabling electoral malpractice and prolonging poor governance. He argued that the people, not the government, hold the key to credible elections.

“The first solution to electoral reform is not the government. The people are the problem. The more you say they have written the results, the more you encourage voter apathy. Voter apathy will make President Tinubu return to the Villa,” he said.

Amaechi insisted that Tinubu’s defeat in Lagos during the 2023 elections was proof that he is not unbeatable. “If Tinubu is that invincible, how was he defeated in Lagos? It can be repeated,” he said, adding that opposition disunity and lack of strategy remain the biggest barriers to change.

‘No Government Can Reform Elections’ — Amaechi Warns Against False Expectations

The former Minister of Transportation dismissed hopes that meaningful electoral reform could come from any incumbent administration, citing entrenched interests within the political class.

“There is no incumbent government that can achieve electoral reform. None. We already tried it and failed,” Amaechi stated.

He accused opposition parties of being uncoordinated and self-serving rather than focused on rescuing the nation.

“The opposition parties are the problem. Nobody is talking about how to save Nigeria. Everyone is thinking about how to grab power,” he said.

Amaechi’s comments drew widespread reactions at the event, as he called on citizens to reclaim their power through collective political participation and vigilance at the polls.

Dickson, Amadi, Others Decry Rigging and Democratic Subversion

Chairman of the event and former Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Seriake Dickson, echoed Amaechi’s concerns, describing election rigging as the “worst coup” against democracy.

“The only time Nigerians exercise sovereignty is during elections. When politicians, governments, and security agencies collude to write results that don’t reflect the people’s will, that’s a coup against democracy,” Dickson said.

He urged the National Assembly to strengthen electoral laws to prevent result manipulation and restore public confidence in the ballot.

In his keynote address, Dr. Sam Amadi, Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, lamented the deep entanglement between political power and electoral management in Nigeria.

“Our elections are always rigged in one form or another. Everyone who manages elections is connected to the President. Neutrality has been abandoned,” he said.

Amadi stressed that free and fair elections remain the only way to guarantee peaceful transitions in a divided and struggling country. He called for institutional reform, civic mobilization, and transparency in INEC operations.

The publisher of First Daily, Daniel Markson, also used the occasion to reflect on Nigeria’s broader leadership failures, declaring that the country has yet to work effectively for its citizens.

The Abuja event ended with a clear consensus among speakers: electoral reform and credible participation must start with the people, not the government. Amaechi’s assertion that Tinubu is “defeatable” set the tone for what may become a defining political debate ahead of 2027 — a contest not only for power but for Nigeria’s democratic integrity.
