Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa has advised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to avoid engaging in any direct confrontation with United States President Donald Trump over recent controversial remarks attributed to him. According to the former governor, Nigeria must not allow itself to be dragged into unnecessary diplomatic tension driven by rhetoric or political theatrics from foreign leaders. Bafarawa argued that Trump is notoriously unpredictable, and reacting emotionally to his statements could expose Nigeria to unnecessary international attention or political backlash.
Bafarawa stated that diplomacy is always stronger than aggression in matters involving global powers, especially when dealing with individuals who thrive on controversy. He stressed that Nigeria must remain strategic, mature, and focused on its national interests rather than responding to provocations designed to generate headlines. According to him, leadership should be guided by wisdom, not ego or political pride.
Bafarawa emphasized that Trump is no longer the President of the United States, and therefore his public utterances should not dictate Nigeria’s foreign policy direction. He advised Tinubu to focus on strengthening Nigeria’s international partnerships and defending national interest through peaceful engagement, noting that reacting publicly could elevate Trump’s comments and give room for unnecessary media speculation.
Bafarawa Calls for Caution and Respect for Diplomatic Channels
Bafarawa urged Tinubu to use established diplomatic channels through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs instead of issuing public counterstatements that could be interpreted as hostility. He emphasized that diplomacy works best when conducted quietly and tactfully, not in the full glare of international media that may twist narratives to suit their agenda. For him, Tinubu should remain guided by Nigeria’s foreign policy principle of non-interference and mutual respect, even in the face of provocation.
Bafarawa further stated that Nigeria must protect its image and avoid any moves that could portray the country as engaging in a political feud with a foreign politician. He noted that Trump’s statements — whether factual or misleading — carry media weight because of his international influence and controversial political persona. He warned that responding aggressively could give Trump further ammunition to continue speaking negatively about Nigeria.
Bafarawa concluded that Nigeria must always behave like the giant of Africa, projecting maturity, calmness, and strategic restraint. He highlighted that while no one should disrespect Nigeria, not every statement deserves a reaction at the presidential level. Instead of confrontation, he recommended engagement, context clarification, and measured diplomacy.
Nigeria’s Interest Comes First, Not Political Ego — Bafarawa Insists
Bafarawa reiterated that President Tinubu’s priority should be the protection of Nigeria’s national interest, economy, and global reputation. He warned that a public confrontation with Trump could indirectly affect Nigeria’s relationship with the U.S., which remains a key economic partner and strategic ally. According to him, countries determine allies based on long-term benefits, not emotional exchanges with political figures.
Bafarawa stated that Tinubu must demonstrate leadership by showing emotional control, not reactive impulsiveness. He advised that Nigeria should always seek peace, collaboration, and respect with international powers — because the cost of unnecessary hostility is too high in a globalized economy. He maintained that national progress is built through diplomatic bridges, not political battles.
Bafarawa finally emphasized that Nigeria should rise above provocations and act as a nation driven by wisdom, not sentiment. According to him, history favors leaders who choose peace over conflict, logic over emotion, and diplomacy over confrontation. He concluded with a reminder: “Avoid confrontation — Nigeria gains nothing from a political fight with Trump.”
