Lagos Govment don close down three popular supermarkets for the city wey still dey use single-use plastic bags, despite the ban wey don dey in place. According to the Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, the supermarkets disobey Lagos State Environmental Protection Law wey no allow use of nylon bags again.

Wahab talk say the ban no be for style or intimidation, but na serious step to protect the environment and stop the wahala wey plastic dey cause for drainage and marine life. He remind business owners say any shop wey still dey use plastic bag go face penalty.

The enforcement team from Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) and KAI storm the supermarkets for different areas of Ikeja and Lekki, collect evidence, and seal the places immediately. The move shock plenty shoppers wey no expect am that morning.

LASEPA General Manager, Dr. Tunde Ajayi, talk say Lagos State don lose plenty money and time to clear drainage because of nylon bags wey people dey throw anyhow. He say single-use plastic don turn to big enemy for environment, and Lagos no go keep quiet watch people destroy their future.

Ajayi talk say the enforcement no go stop with supermarkets alone. He say hotels, restaurants, and even roadside vendors go feel am if dem no comply. According to am, the state dey ready to make Lagos the cleanest city for Africa.

He add say the government don introduce reusable and biodegradable bags to replace nylon, make people adapt quickly. “We no dey wicked; we dey protect our environment,” Ajayi talk as he urge residents to support the campaign.
