Peter Obi to FG, States: Stop Destroying People’s Property, Show Compassion for Citizens

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has issued a strong condemnation of the ongoing demolition of private properties by various government agencies across Nigeria. Obi described the acts as “willful destruction” that disregard due process and the welfare of citizens.

In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Obi expressed deep concern over the widespread demolition of structures and goods without prior notice, stressing that such actions only worsen the country’s already dire economic situation. He noted that it was unjustifiable for any government to embark on such measures at a time when millions of Nigerians were struggling with poverty and inflation.

“The recent demolition of citizens’ structures and the destruction of their goods and merchandise remain condemnable,” Peter Obi wrote. “An administration whose policies have sent several million Nigerians into poverty in just 29 months should show compassion for its citizens.”

Demolitions Destroy Livelihoods and Undermine Economic Stability”

Peter Obi emphasized that the demolitions, often carried out under the guise of urban renewal or enforcement, have had devastating effects on ordinary Nigerians. According to him, many of the affected shops and properties contained goods worth billions of naira, representing years of investment, savings, and labor.

“These demolitions destroy livelihoods, undermine businesses, and threaten the economic security of hardworking citizens,” he said. “What legal authority justifies the destruction of private property—not used for criminal purposes—without prior notice or due process?”

He questioned the motives behind such actions, asking whether they genuinely serve the public interest or merely reflect arbitrary exercises of governmental power. Obi warned that the disregard for property rights not only discourages entrepreneurship but also erodes public trust in government institutions.

Peter Obi Calls for Compassionate Governance and Adherence to Rule of Law

Peter Obi urged both the Federal and State Governments to reconsider their approach and prioritize the protection of citizens’ investments and dignity. He maintained that urban development and environmental enforcement must always be carried out within the framework of the law and with respect for human rights.

“These acts of demolition send a chilling message to entrepreneurs across the nation and beyond—that their hard work and sacrifices can be wiped away overnight,” Obi warned. “If we fail to stand against such injustices, we risk undermining the very foundations of economic growth and social stability.”

He concluded by reaffirming that every Nigerian has the right to build a livelihood through honest work and that this right must never be trampled upon.
