EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede: Internet Fraud Triggering Stricter Visa Policies for Nigerians

Ola Olukoyede, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has revealed that the rising wave of internet fraud is a major reason why Nigerians face stricter visa requirements abroad. He explained that fraudulent practices by a minority of citizens are damaging Nigeria’s reputation, prompting foreign governments to impose tougher checks on visa applicants.

Ola Olukoyede noted that embassies and consulates have increasingly become cautious with Nigerian applications, citing concerns linked to online scams and financial crimes. He stressed that this situation unfairly punishes genuine citizens seeking legitimate opportunities outside the country.

Olukoyede maintained that cybercrime has become a stumbling block for Nigeria’s international mobility and warned that it undermines the credibility of millions of hardworking Nigerians.

Ola Olukoyede Calls for National Response to Cybercrime

Ola Olukoyede urged parents, schools, religious leaders, and community influencers to actively discourage young people from engaging in fraudulent online activities. He expressed concern that the normalization of “yahoo-yahoo” culture among youths could have long-lasting effects on Nigeria’s socio-economic stability.

Olukoyede explained that although the EFCC has intensified enforcement through arrests, investigations, and prosecutions, tackling cybercrime requires more than law enforcement. He stressed the need for sustained public sensitization, moral reorientation, and greater investment in productive sectors to redirect the energy of Nigerian youths.

Ola Olukoyede assured citizens that the EFCC remains committed to combating internet fraud while also protecting the country’s global reputation.

Ola Olukoyede Highlights Global Impact of Internet Fraud

Olukoyede warned that if cybercrime persists, Nigeria may face even harsher travel restrictions from international partners. He noted that fraudulent practices discourage foreign investment, strain diplomatic relations, and reduce opportunities for Nigerians abroad.

Olukoyede explained that some embassies already classify Nigeria as a high-risk country for fraud-related offenses, leading to more documentation requirements, longer visa processing times, and in some cases, outright denials.

Olukoyede concluded that restoring Nigeria’s image requires collective responsibility, adding that progress against cybercrime would help repair international trust and secure better opportunities for law-abiding citizens.
