The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has strongly criticised the arraignment and remand of Comfort Emmanson, a female passenger of an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos accused of assaulting crew members and exhibiting unruly behaviour.
In a statement on his official X handle, Peter Obi acknowledged that her conduct should not be condoned but insisted that the justice system must be fair, equal, and non-selective. He argued that while swift legal action was taken against Comfort Emmanson, other individuals who have committed more severe aviation offences have not faced similar treatment.
Peter Obi drew attention to the recent incident involving Fuji music legend Wasiu Ayinde, also known as K1 De Ultimate, who allegedly delayed a flight at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, putting “hundreds of lives at risk.” He expressed outrage that K1 was neither arrested nor arraigned, despite the seriousness of the offence.
Comparison to High-Profile Aviation Misconduct
Without directly naming K1 De Ultimate,Peter Obi said it was unacceptable that one offender was “hurriedly taken to court and remanded” while another, with possible political connections, remained free and even received public calls for forgiveness from government officials.
“This case is not just about one young woman; it is about the double standards that poison our justice system. Justice in Nigeria must never be about who is poor or powerless versus who has influence or access to government officials,” Peter Obi said.
He further stressed that such discrepancies undermine the rule of law and perpetuate a justice system where the powerful are shielded from accountability while the less privileged are made examples of.
Condemnation of ‘Dehumanising’ Treatment
Peter Obi also denounced what he described as the “dehumanising” treatment of Comfort Emmanson, particularly reports that she was publicly stripped before being remanded.
“Stripping her publicly was not only unnecessary but also represents the height of rascality and abuse by our agencies,” he said, adding that the punishment was disproportionate compared to the acts of high-ranking individuals who embezzle public funds without facing similar humiliation.
According to the former Anambra governor, such treatment reflects a deeper societal problem where the justice system is weaponised against the poor and women in particular, while influential figures enjoy impunity.
Peter Obi Call for Accountability from Aviation Authorities
The Labour Party standard-bearer demanded that the Minister of Aviation and other relevant agencies explain the apparent double standards in handling aviation offences.
“We must end this selective treatment of the poor or less privileged. If justice must be served, it should be served to all, and it must be served fairly,” Peter Obi stated. “The rule of law based on justice for all must remain the guidepost of our democracy.”
He urged policymakers to ensure that punishments are proportionate to offences, regardless of an offender’s social or political standing, insisting that true justice is blind to wealth or influence.
Airline Operators Impose Lifetime Ban
Meanwhile, the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) on Monday announced a lifetime ban on Comfort Emmanson, preventing her from flying with any AON member airline, either domestically or internationally.
The ban, which took immediate effect, was confirmed in a statement by AON spokesperson, Obiora Okonkwo, who warned that any passenger exhibiting similar behaviour in the future would face the same penalty.
The AON emphasised that the decision was necessary to protect airline staff and ensure the safety of passengers, stressing that unruly behaviour in aviation poses significant safety risks and will not be tolerated.
