Defence Chief Musa Warns Politicians and Clerics Aiding Bandits: ‘You Will Face the Military’

Defence Chief General Christopher Musa has issued a strongly worded warning that anyone aiding or abetting bandit groups in Nigeria will be treated as an “enemy of the state.” The statement, delivered during a press briefing in Abuja, underscores the military’s determination to crush the growing menace of terrorism, kidnapping, and rural banditry.

Defence Chief Musa emphasised that the security forces will adopt a zero-tolerance approach to anyone, regardless of their social or political standing, who provides moral, financial, or logistical support to violent non-state actors. According to him, Nigeria can no longer afford to condone individuals or groups who fuel insecurity while innocent citizens continue to suffer brutal attacks across communities.

Defence Chief Highlights Growing Complexity of Insecurity

Defence Chief Musa explained that banditry has evolved from mere criminality into a coordinated network of violent enterprises with sophisticated funding and weaponry. He disclosed that intelligence reports show some individuals and groups deliberately enabling these networks, making it harder for the military to secure rural and border communities.

Defence Chief Musa further stated that the military has identified certain local and international funding channels sustaining these criminal gangs. He hinted that ongoing investigations could soon lead to high-profile arrests, noting that the government will no longer hesitate to hold enablers accountable in the same way as the perpetrators themselves.

Defence Chief Calls for Community Cooperation

Defence Chief Musa appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, and civil society organisations to help identify and expose anyone providing covert support to armed groups. He stressed that community-level intelligence is critical in dismantling the cells that operate in remote forests and ungoverned spaces.

Defence Chief Musa urged Nigerians to resist fear and report suspicious activities, adding that collective vigilance is the only way to outsmart the networks thriving on secrecy. He warned that shielding bandits for ethnic or financial reasons would ultimately worsen the insecurity and economic hardship plaguing affected states.

Defence Chief Warns Political Actors Against Interference

Defence Chief Musa also cautioned political elites against using bandits as instruments of electoral manipulation or territorial control. He revealed that previous military operations had uncovered political figures who indirectly sponsored armed groups to disrupt voting or intimidate opponents.

Defence Chief Musa stated that the armed forces will no longer tolerate such practices, promising to investigate and prosecute any politician found guilty of collusion. He maintained that national security must never be sacrificed for political advantage and assured Nigerians that the military will act decisively.

Defence Chief Defends Tough Counter-Terrorism Strategy

Defence Chief Musa defended the military’s controversial “enemy of the state” classification, arguing that it is necessary to dismantle the financial and logistical backbone of terrorist groups. He explained that the law provides for such measures when national security is at stake, particularly in a conflict environment where civilians are often the primary victims.

Defence Chief Musa maintained that those who shield terrorists directly endanger Nigerian lives and must face the full wrath of the law. He added that the military is working closely with security agencies to develop a watertight prosecution process that will deter others from attempting to sabotage ongoing operations.

Defence Chief Vows to Restore Peace and Stability

Defence Chief Musa concluded by assuring Nigerians that the armed forces remain committed to eradicating banditry and terrorism. He noted that the military has intensified operations across the North West and North Central, recording major successes in recent weeks.

Defence Chief Musa reiterated that no one, irrespective of influence or connections, will be allowed to derail the nation’s security objectives. He called on citizens to stand united behind the armed forces, pledging that every operation will be conducted in strict adherence to international humanitarian law and the Nigerian constitution.
