PDP Shifts National Convention to November, Picks Ibadan as New Venue

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially shifted the date of its much-anticipated National Elective Convention from August to November 2025. The announcement was made on Thursday during a press conference held at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja, following the 101st National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

Debo Ologunagba, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, disclosed that the adjustment in date was a strategic move to allow for broader consultations and to consolidate recent internal restructuring efforts. “This rescheduling is in the best interest of the party. It allows us to build greater unity and prepare more adequately for the tasks ahead,” he told journalists.

According to Ologunagba, the convention remains a crucial step in strengthening the party’s internal democracy as it moves toward the 2027 general elections. He noted that the NEC reached a consensus on the new date after deliberating on various political and logistical considerations.

Ibadan Replaces Kano as Convention Venue

In a significant change from earlier plans, the party also announced that the convention venue has been moved from Kano to Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. Ologunagba stated that the decision was made after consultations with key stakeholders and leaders within the party’s hierarchy, who expressed concerns about the suitability of Kano at this time.

“After careful evaluation of all logistics, security, and inclusiveness, the NEC resolved that Ibadan would provide a more conducive atmosphere for hosting delegates from across the country,” Ologunagba said. He emphasized the party’s desire to hold a hitch-free and transparent convention in a location that reflects its national character and strategic intentions.

The choice of Ibadan, a historically significant city in Nigeria’s political landscape, is seen by analysts as a deliberate attempt by the PDP to reinforce its influence in the Southwest region, where it seeks to regain lost ground ahead of 2027.

Strategic Timing as PDP Eyes 2027 Elections

Political observers believe that the rescheduling of the convention is tied to broader electoral calculations by the PDP as it positions itself as the leading opposition party in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections. The delay allows for deeper alignment among factions and the opportunity to present a unified leadership to Nigerians.

Sources within the party suggest that key national positions — including the National Chairman and members of the National Working Committee (NWC) — may be reshuffled during the November convention. This could signal a shift in internal power dynamics as the PDP tries to rejuvenate its national appeal.

“The PDP is preparing to return to power, and part of that preparation is ensuring that its leadership reflects competence, unity, and broad national appeal,” a senior party chieftain, who pleaded anonymity, said following the NEC meeting.

Convention to Reflect Renewed Commitment to Internal Democracy

Ologunagba emphasized that the November convention would be conducted in line with the highest standards of internal democracy, transparency, and accountability. He reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to a delegate-driven process that ensures inclusivity, fairness, and adherence to the party’s constitution.

He added that party members across the 36 states and the FCT should expect timely guidelines from the convention planning committee, which will soon be inaugurated. “We assure our members and stakeholders that preparations for the convention will be thorough and inclusive. We are committed to upholding the democratic ideals for which our party is known,” he said.

Preparations will include zonal consultations, harmonization of interests, and strategic engagements aimed at ensuring that the event strengthens the PDP’s foundation and resolves outstanding disputes within the party.

Opposition Coalition Looms Large in PDP’s Calculations

While announcing the new convention schedule, Ologunagba subtly referenced the recently formed opposition coalition, which has seen other parties attempting to merge ahead of 2027. The PDP spokesman reiterated that the party remains the most viable alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and that the upcoming convention would prove pivotal in uniting the base and rallying national support.

“The PDP is not just preparing for a convention. We are preparing to rescue Nigeria from misgovernance. This is not the time for distractions or internal wrangling. This is a time for consolidation, unity, and bold leadership,” he asserted.

Political analysts believe that the convention’s outcome will send strong signals about the PDP’s readiness to reclaim national leadership, especially if it results in a leadership team capable of inspiring confidence and building coalitions across political and regional lines. With November now set, all eyes are on Ibadan for what could become a defining moment in Nigeria’s 2027 political race.
