Peter Obi Declares 2027 Presidential Ambition, Dismisses Running Mate Speculations

Opposition figure and former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has officially declared his intention to contest for the presidency of Nigeria in the 2027 general election. Speaking during an interview on Sunday Politics, Obi emphatically stated, “I’m going to contest for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it.”

Peter Obi’s declaration puts to rest months of speculation surrounding his political future and dismisses widespread rumours that he might settle for the vice-presidential slot, possibly as a running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). “This is not in play; nobody has ever discussed that,” Obi clarified. “People assume so many things. Nobody has ever discussed with me whether I am going to be A or B or C.”

The former Anambra State governor reaffirmed his commitment to the Labour Party while also highlighting his involvement in a broader opposition coalition, the African Democratic Congress (ADC), aimed at unseating the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and its leader, President Bola Tinubu, in 2027.

A Coalition to Rescue Nigeria

Peter Obi underscored his role in the newly formed coalition of opposition parties, which includes influential political heavyweights like Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, ex-ministers Rauf Aregbesola and Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai. The coalition, which has adopted the ADC as its platform, aims to present a united front against President Tinubu’s anticipated second-term bid.

“I am part of the coalition which will be able to produce a president with the capacity and compassion to save this country,” Peter Obi declared. He stressed that the alliance is focused on selecting a candidate who embodies integrity, competence, and a clear vision to rescue Nigeria from its current socio-economic woes.

The opposition coalition is banking on the combined strength of the votes garnered by Atiku and Obi in the 2023 elections—over 12 million votes, which surpassed the total votes declared for Tinubu by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The opposition sees this as a sign that a united front can wrestle power from the APC.

Just Four Years to Deliver—Peter Obi Promises Swift Action

In a bold assertion of his leadership style, Peter Obi pledged that he would not require more than four years to put Nigeria on the path of sustainable development and good governance. “I don’t need a day more than four years. I will show the direction of good governance,” he said.

Obi lamented the state of the nation, noting that just two years of misgovernance had inflicted enormous damage on the economy and the living standards of ordinary Nigerians. He expressed confidence that in the same timeframe, the country could be steered towards recovery and prosperity under the right leadership.

“People want to wake up and see a president that cares, that shows compassion,” Peter Obi asserted, highlighting the need for empathetic leadership that places citizens’ welfare above personal or political interests.

The Road to 2027: Uniting Against Tinubu

The push for a formidable opposition coalition reached a new height on July 2, 2025, when key political figures announced the adoption of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the vehicle to challenge President Tinubu’s administration. The move was driven by widespread dissatisfaction with Tinubu’s handling of the economy, soaring inflation, and the escalating cost of living which have fueled public discontent.

The opposition leaders believe that by setting aside party differences and uniting behind a common candidate, they can capitalize on their numerical strength from the last election and present a credible alternative to the Nigerian people. Talks are ongoing within the coalition to finalize a joint ticket, with Peter Obi emerging as a front-runner in the race for the presidential slot.

Obi’s decision to throw his hat into the ring early signals his readiness to galvanize support across the country, mobilize grassroots structures, and engage voters on the issues that matter most—economic revival, security, education, and governance reforms.

Experience Matters: Obi Defends Coalition Choices

Responding to criticisms that the coalition is packed with “expired” politicians and individuals who served in previous governments, Obi defended the inclusion of seasoned political actors in the movement. He emphasized that experience—both of failure and success—would be vital in steering the country away from its current path of economic and social decline.

“In fact, even some who have been in that government, their experience is critical,” Obi explained. “One of the major companies in the world hired two people who had worked in failed companies because they could explain why those companies failed.”

Obi insisted that rebuilding Nigeria would require drawing on the wisdom of both those who have tasted success and those who have witnessed failure, adding, “I need everyone. It is a critical experience because they know what can fail a system and they know what was wrong with the system.”

As the countdown to the 2027 elections gathers momentum, Peter Obi’s declaration has once again stirred the political waters, setting the stage for what promises to be one of Nigeria’s most keenly contested presidential races.
