Governor Ademola Adeleke Reaffirms Loyalty to PDP as Wave of Defections Rocks Opposition Party

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has firmly denied speculation suggesting his imminent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), insisting he remains a committed and loyal member of the party. Taking to his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Saturday, Governor Adeleke reassured the people of Osun State and Nigerians that he has no intention of leaving the PDP, which he described as his political family.

“Over the last few hours, I have been inundated with calls regarding rumours of a possible defection. I want to assure the good people of Osun State and Nigerians at large; I remain a loyal member and the leader of the People’s Democratic Party in Osun State,” Governor Ademola Adeleke wrote.

He emphasized that his focus remains on delivering on his administration’s five-point development agenda, which he described as the cornerstone of his commitment to the people. Governor Adeleke called on the public to disregard the “fake news” and continue supporting his efforts to build a better Osun State.

Political Visit Sparks Rumours, Governor Ademola Adeleke Responds

The recent speculation surrounding Governor Ademola Adeleke’s political allegiance intensified following his private visit to President Bola Tinubu’s residence in Ikoyi, Lagos, on June 3. Accompanied by his brother, billionaire businessman Adedeji Adeleke, and global Afrobeats sensation David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, the meeting sparked widespread rumours of a potential shift in political loyalties.

Although the governor Adeleke described the visit as purely private and non-political, social media and political circles were rife with speculation, given the spate of recent defections from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

This is not the first time Governor Adeleke has had to put to rest such defection rumours. In May, during a crucial stakeholders’ meeting in Osogbo, he reiterated his unwavering loyalty to the PDP and his refusal to be swayed by political distractions, stressing that his priority remains the welfare of Osun citizens.

Wave of Defections Deepens PDP Crisis

Governor Ademola Adeleke’s public clarification comes at a time when the PDP is facing unprecedented internal challenges, including high-profile defections that have sent shockwaves through the party’s national structure. On June 6, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, officially defected to the APC, citing the need for alignment with the federal government to accelerate development in his state.

Similarly, on April 23, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, along with his deputy Monday Onyeme, several commissioners, and local government chairmen, also crossed over to the APC. Their move was soon followed by former Delta State Governor and PDP’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, Ifeanyi Okowa, further fueling concerns about the party’s unity and future.

These defections have compounded the crisis within the PDP, raising concerns among party faithful and political analysts over the opposition’s ability to maintain cohesion and present a credible challenge to the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Internal Party Struggles Threaten PDP’s Stability

The PDP is not only grappling with external defections but is also battling internal leadership disputes that have weakened its organisational stability. A fierce contest over the position of National Secretary has pitted Samuel Anyanwu against Sunday Ude-Okoye, with both individuals laying claim to the role. The disagreement has further splintered the party’s national leadership and affected its capacity to project unity.

Adding to the turbulence, on June 30, prominent party chieftain Bode George, alongside several members of the National Working Committee (NWC), was reportedly barred from entering the party’s Wadata Plaza secretariat in Abuja for scheduled National Executive Committee (NEC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) meetings. The blockade was later lifted, allowing the PDP to proceed with its landmark 100th NEC meeting, but the incident underscored the depth of the party’s internal divisions.

Despite these challenges, some PDP leaders, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, are engaged in coalition talks aimed at uniting opposition forces, including the African Democratic Congress (ADC), in a bid to mount a formidable challenge to the APC in the coming elections.

Governor Ademola Adeleke Calls for Unity and Focus on Governance

Against this backdrop of political instability, Governor Adeleke’s latest clarification serves as an attempt to calm nerves and steer attention back to governance. Reiterating his commitment to Osun State’s development, Adeleke urged the public and his supporters not to be distracted by political rumours but to continue working together to achieve shared goals.

“My focus remains on delivering good governance and fulfilling our five-point agenda for Osun people. Please disregard the fake news and continue to support our mission for a better Osun State,” he stated.

The governor Ademola Adeleke’s steady reassurance is seen by observers as a stabilizing move not only for his administration but also for the embattled PDP, which is in dire need of unity and clear leadership. As political realignments continue ahead of the 2027 elections, Governor Adeleke’s stance could either inspire renewed confidence within the PDP or become yet another flashpoint in Nigeria’s dynamic political landscape.
