Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa Ignites Fierce Debate with Fresh Ondo Cabinet Nominees Submission

Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Governor of Ondo State, has thrown the political landscape into a heated debate after forwarding a list of 12 commissioner nominees to the Ondo State House of Assembly. The submission, made under the constitutional authority vested in him by Section 192 (1&2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), has drawn mixed reactions across party lines, civil society organizations, and traditional institutions within the state.

In his official letter to the Speaker, Rt Hon Olamide Oladiji, Governor Aiyedatiwa urged the Assembly for expedited confirmation, emphasizing the urgent need to stabilize and strengthen the State Executive Council. However, critics have argued that the list reflects political favoritism, regional imbalance, and strategic positioning for the 2027 governorship race.

Allegations of Political Nepotism and Cronyism Surface

Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s list has fueled allegations of political nepotism, with many accusing him of appointing loyalists and personal allies at the expense of qualified technocrats. Names like Alhaji Amidu Takuro and Mr. Idowu Ajanaku, known associates of the governor, have come under heavy public scrutiny for what critics describe as “reward-based” nominations.

Opposition figures within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and even factions of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State claim the governor is building a personal political army rather than focusing on technocratic governance. Social commentators have warned that such appointments may deepen political polarization in an already divided state.

Lucky Aiyedatiwa Defends Selections as Merit-Based

Lucky Aiyedatiwa, responding to the growing backlash, defended his list as purely merit-based, arguing that every nominee has a strong track record of public service, technical expertise, and a deep understanding of the peculiar challenges facing Ondo State. He emphasized that the appointments reflect a delicate balance of experience, professionalism, and regional representation.

“I have no intention of politicizing governance. My duty is to assemble the most competent team that can deliver on the promises made to the people of Ondo State,” Aiyedatiwa stated while addressing press concerns in Akure. He also warned detractors against politicizing appointments meant to serve the people.

Ondo Assembly Faces Mounting Pressure Ahead of Confirmation

Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s request has placed the Ondo State House of Assembly in a difficult position, as public pressure mounts on the lawmakers to reject some of the nominees. Civil society groups, youth organizations, and some elder statesmen have called for an open confirmation process to ensure transparency.

The Speaker, Rt Hon Olamide Oladiji, acknowledged receipt of the nomination letter but declined further comments on whether the Assembly would conduct public hearings. Observers believe that any attempt to fast-track the confirmation may lead to wider protests and legal challenges from opposition groups.

Ethnic and Zonal Marginalization Claims Rock Ondo

Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s nomination list has also reopened old wounds of ethnic and zonal marginalization in Ondo politics. Leaders from Ondo North Senatorial District claim they were shortchanged, arguing that the majority of the nominees come from the South and Central districts where the governor draws much of his support.

Some traditional rulers have also weighed in, expressing disappointment over what they describe as “continued sidelining” of certain ethnic groups and professional blocs within the state. Analysts warn that if not carefully managed, the controversy may snowball into a full-blown political crisis with 2027 elections looming on the horizon.

Analysts See 2027 Political Calculations Behind Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s Moves

Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s latest appointments are being widely interpreted as strategic groundwork for his rumored 2027 governorship ambition. By positioning loyalists in strategic ministries, the governor is allegedly securing the bureaucratic machinery needed for future political dominance.

Political observers argue that while every sitting governor has the prerogative to appoint allies, Aiyedatiwa’s bold consolidation of power may provoke internal APC resistance and embolden the PDP ahead of future electoral contests. The coming weeks are likely to determine whether his gambit pays off or triggers unintended political consequences.
