Fentanyl Distribution Ring [November 14th]- Collin Edwards, a 29-year-old resident of Largo, Maryland, has pleaded guilty for his involvement in a fentanyl distribution ring, according to an announcement by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves, Special Agent in Charge Wayne A. Jacobs of the FBI Washington Office’s Criminal and Cyber Division, and Special Agent in Charge Troy W. Springer of the U.S. Department of Labor – Office of Inspector General.
Collin Edwards Pleads Guilty in Fentanyl Distribution Ring
Edwards, also known as “Chills,” entered his guilty plea in U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia on charges related to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 400 or more grams of a mixture containing fentanyl and a mixture containing cocaine.
In his plea agreement to Fentanyl Distribution, Edwards acknowledged responsibility for producing at least 1.2 kilograms of a mixture containing a detectable amount of fentanyl. Additionally, he pleaded guilty to aggravated identity theft. The plea agreement stipulates a mandatory minimum sentence of 12 years in prison for Edwards, who is scheduled to be sentenced on March 5, 2024, by U.S. District Judge Amit P. Mehta. As part of the resolution, Edwards has also agreed to forfeit $100,000.
Pill Pressing Operation Uncovered in Washington, D.C. and Maryland
Court documents reveal that the investigation into Edwards and his associates in their Fentanyl Distribution Ring began in August 2021 when law enforcement uncovered a drug trafficking group operating a fentanyl pill pressing operation in Washington, D.C., and Maryland. The group possessed at least three pill presses, using them to manufacture counterfeit prescription pills containing fentanyl. These pills were subsequently distributed throughout the Washington, D.C., and Maryland areas. Edwards and six other individuals were identified as participants in this illicit drug trafficking operation.
Edwards played a role in distributing the counterfeit pills, coordinating with co-conspirators to circulate them among various distributors and users. On March 29, 2022, the FBI executed a search warrant at an apartment in Southeast Washington, D.C., which served as a stash house for the drug trafficking conspiracy’s pill press operation. The search resulted in the seizure of over 516 pills and more than 76 grams of a mixture containing fentanyl. This intervention exposed the extent of the operation and the danger it posed to public health and safety.
Multi-State Unemployment Insurance Fraud Scheme
During the search of the apartment, authorities seized Edwards’ cellphone, revealing evidence of a separate conspiracy involving identity theft and false unemployment insurance claims. Edwards and his co-conspirators defrauded multiple states, illegally obtaining at least $250,000 through this scheme.
