2027: Wike Slams Obi, Declares Nigeria ‘Too Complex for Social Media Presidency’

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has launched a fierce verbal attack on the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, questioning his leadership capacity and competence to govern Nigeria. Speaking on Thursday during the commissioning of two newly completed roads—Esther Bali Street (ILS11) and Kez Udezue Street (MAR24)—in Mabushi, Abuja, Wike dismissed Obi’s approach to governance as shallow and performative.

The former Rivers State governor accused Obi of failing to demonstrate credible leadership during his tenure as governor of Anambra State, saying his record does not justify his frequent criticisms of government. “You run as president under a party, and you cannot manage the party. Ordinary party you cannot hold together, yet you want to manage Nigeria of over 200 million people. It is not available for people like you,” Wike declared.

He added that Obi’s presidential ambitions were confined to the digital space, saying, “You will continue to contest as president on social media but not as president of Nigeria.” Wike further mocked Obi’s public appearances and humanitarian gestures, describing them as “mere political theatre” aimed at emotional manipulation rather than genuine service.

Enough of the Hypocrisy,’ Wike Says, Comparing FCT and Obi’s Anambra Records

In a direct comparison of administrative performance, Wike challenged Obi to measure his eight-year tenure in Anambra State against the FCT’s progress in just two years under his leadership. “We just came into office two years ago. You stayed eight good years. Compare what you’ve done in Anambra with what we’ve done in FCT. Can you really say you love this country? Certainly not,” Wike said.

He accused Obi of hypocrisy, arguing that the Labour Party leader’s supposed compassion was inconsistent with his record in office. “When you were a governor, why didn’t you celebrate your birthday in an IDP camp? Now you want to be president, every day you go to IDP camps for birthdays. Who are you deceiving?” Wike asked.

The FCT Minister also accused Obi of prioritising financial gains over development. “Instead of developing Anambra, you took the money and put it in the bank where you had interest. The money was meant to develop the state, but Anambra was suffering,” he claimed. Wike promised that in the coming weeks, the FCT Administration would showcase tangible achievements in public schools to counter what he described as Obi’s “propaganda politics.”

Good Citizenship Over Political Showmanship

Shifting focus from political rivalry to governance ethics, Wike emphasized that responsible citizenship requires active engagement with government rather than online criticism. He narrated how Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Damian Dodo, drew his attention to the deplorable state of Kez Udezue Street, prompting immediate government intervention.

“That is what they call a responsive government,” Wike said. “Good citizens are those who think about the welfare of the country and call the attention of the government, not those who run to social media to castigate it.” Wike commended Dodo for his civic consciousness, adding that the FCT Administration would honour him for his contribution.

FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, praised President Bola Tinubu’s leadership and lauded Wike’s efforts as instrumental in driving the Renewed Hope Agenda in the capital city. The event underscored the administration’s ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure and strengthen civic responsibility in Abuja.
