Popular Ibadan-based broadcaster and media entrepreneur, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 Oyo State governorship election on the platform of the Accord Party. The founder of Agidigbo FM made the announcement during a public declaration in Ibadan, marking his entry into partisan politics after years of civic engagement and public advocacy.
Hamzat’s declaration signals a clear shift from his previous role as a mobiliser and supporter of other political figures. He stated unequivocally that his focus ahead of 2027 would be on his own ambition, as he seeks to offer himself directly to the people of Oyo State as a governorship candidate.
Hamzat Formal Declaration and Political Commitment
At the well-attended event, Hamzat publicly distanced himself from campaigning or mobilising support for any other aspirant, emphasising his readiness to personally contest for the state’s highest office. He told supporters that his decision was deliberate and rooted in a desire to take responsibility for leadership rather than act from the sidelines.
“I am publicly declaring today that in 2027, I will not campaign for anyone or mobilise crowds for anyone. I will contest in the gubernatorial election under the Accord Party,” Hamzat said, drawing applause from party faithful and supporters.
Observers say the declaration reflects Hamzat’s confidence in his grassroots popularity, built over the years through his radio platform, which has remained influential in Oyo State’s socio-political discourse.
Hamzat Joining Accord Party and Vision for Oyo State
Hamzat formally joined the Accord Party at the ceremony, where he announced his governorship ambition. He described his move as motivated by a passion to serve the masses and to promote good governance across Oyo State. According to him, the Accord Party provides a platform aligned with people-centred leadership and accountability.
“Now that I have joined Accord, I hereby declare my intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State,” he said. He promised unprecedented development if elected, assuring residents of transparent governance and inclusive leadership. “We will make Oyo State great again if I am eventually elected governor in 2027,” Hamzat added.
He urged his supporters to remain committed and united, stressing that collective effort would be essential in the journey towards 2027.
Party Leadership, Defections, and Political Implications
The declaration ceremony also featured key party leaders and new entrants. Accord National Chairman, Mr Maxwell Nduibem, formally received Hamzat and other defectors into the party, describing Accord as a masses-friendly platform and a credible alternative in Nigeria’s political space.
Accord National Secretary, Dr Olubukola Ajaja, said Hamzat’s entry significantly strengthened the party in the South-West and at the national level. He noted that Oriyomi’s popularity, integrity, and compassion could help reposition the party ahead of future elections.
Also at the event, notable politician Mr Wale Ajani, a former aide to Governor Seyi Makinde and immediate past Director-General of Oyo liaison offices in Abuja and Lagos, defected from the PDP to Accord. Ajani said concern for the plight of the people informed his decision, assuring the party of massive mobilisation efforts. The News Agency of Nigeria reported that Oriyomi’s declaration has begun to reshape Oyo State’s political landscape, as hundreds of supporters turned out in solidarity.
