The Senator representing Kwara North Senatorial District, Sulaiman Sadiq, has formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Kwara State under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Sadiq made the announcement on Monday during an appearance on Politics Tonight, a current affairs programme on Television Continental, stating that he is prepared to provide purposeful leadership and foster inclusive development across the kwara state.
Declaration of Intent and Leadership Vision For Kwara State
Speaking during the televised interview, Sadiq expressed confidence in his capacity to lead Kwara State, citing his professional background in both the private and public sectors as a strong foundation for governance. He maintained that leadership demands exposure, competence, and sincerity of purpose—qualities he believes he has developed over the years.
According to the lawmaker, his accumulated experience positions him to drive inclusive growth and sustainable development. He emphasised the need for strategic planning and effective policy implementation to ensure that development initiatives reach all parts of the state.
Sadiq further noted that his ambition is anchored on a commitment to balanced governance and economic progress, pledging to prioritise policies that would stimulate investment, create employment opportunities, and strengthen public institutions.
Call for Zoning and Equity in Governance In Kwara State
A central theme of the senator’s declaration was the issue of equity among the three senatorial districts in Kwara State. He argued that it is time for Kwara North to produce the next governor, stressing that such an arrangement would promote fairness and strengthen unity within the state.
He stated that allowing Kwara North to occupy the governorship seat would enhance balanced development and deepen the sense of belonging among residents. The call aligns with longstanding political conversations in the state regarding rotational leadership among Kwara North, Kwara Central, and Kwara South.
In response to reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may zone its governorship ticket to Kwara Central, Sadiq said the APC remains confident and unthreatened. He described the ruling party as well-positioned across the three senatorial districts and expressed optimism about securing victory in the 2027 general elections.
APC Preparations and State Congress
As political activities gradually gather momentum ahead of 2027, the APC in Kwara State has intensified its internal processes. According to reports, the party has scheduled its State Congress for Tuesday, March 3, 2026.
The congress is expected to hold at the Arca Centre in Ilorin, the state capital, with proceedings set to commence at 10 a.m. Accredited delegates from across the state are anticipated to participate in the exercise.
Party officials have described the congress as part of ongoing nationwide internal activities aimed at strengthening party structures. Observers note that the outcome of these processes may shape alignments and strategies ahead of the 2027 governorship contest in Kwara State.
