In a development that may shape political alignments ahead of the 2027 general election, the 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Wednesday held a closed-door meeting with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, at the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.
Although details of the discussions were not disclosed, the meeting has generated interest within political circles, with observers suggesting it may form part of wider consultations and strategic engagements ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Courtesy Visit or Strategic Consultation?
Speaking with journalists after the meeting, Kwankwaso stated that his visit to Ibadan was primarily to inaugurate the NNPP’s new state office as part of efforts to strengthen the party’s structure and unity in Oyo State. He explained that he considered it appropriate to pay a courtesy visit to Governor Makinde before proceeding to the party event.
According to Kwankwaso, the meeting transcended partisan considerations and was rooted in longstanding personal ties. Kwankwaso acknowledged Makinde’s membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), while reflecting on his own extensive political history within the PDP before his defection to other platforms.
He noted that he was among those who formed the PDP in 1998 and was elected Governor of Kano State under its platform in 1999. He also served as Minister of Defence and later held national and international assignments, including diplomatic engagements in conflict regions such as Darfur and Somalia.
NNPP’s Expansion in Oyo and 2027 Calculations
Kwankwaso, who later joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) before aligning with the NNPP, currently serves as the national leader of the NNPP. During his visit, he inaugurated the party’s office in Ibadan, describing the move as part of broader efforts to consolidate the party’s presence in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 general election.
He was accompanied by the NNPP’s National Chairman, Dr Ajid Ahmed, National Publicity Secretary Najipo Johnson, and other senior party officials. The inauguration, party officials said, symbolises renewed commitment to grassroots mobilisation and structural development within the state.
The NNPP leader recently faced political setbacks following the defection of Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf to the ruling APC. Kwankwaso, however, expressed confidence that the NNPP would reposition itself and ensure a competitive outing in 2027.
Kwankwaso political calculation and Broader Political Realignments
Recent reports have suggested possible political realignments involving Kwankwaso, including speculation that he may consider joining another political platform ahead of 2027. He has previously stated that he would align with any party willing to offer him a presidential or vice-presidential ticket.
Political analysts view his visit to Makinde as part of ongoing consultations across party lines. While both leaders described the meeting as cordial and personal, observers believe such engagements are rarely detached from the broader political climate.
As Nigeria gradually moves towards the 2027 elections, meetings of this nature are expected to intensify, reflecting the fluid and evolving nature of the country’s political landscape.
